Dealer Incentives

Just wondering - outloud - i have taken my 05 in today for a leak from the crank seal - very small but steady and a split left front outer axle seal - not leaking - yet. I am hoping these are covered under the Ford ESP i bought. My question is how do dealers get paid for these repairs. Do they recieve the same compensation from Ford that say they would if i was just paying for the repair out of my pocket. Is there an incentive for them to do these repairs or not do them or is it all the same in the end. I was wondering because of the upsell attemps while i was in there dropping off the truck. Are warrentys good or bad deals for them or just necessary evils?

Well to update - service guy called today - they found the bedplate leaking and the cam sensor leaking - fully covered - however need 5 days to fix since the motor has to come out and they have to wait on parts. bummer. the axle seal is a 4 hour job - 100 bucks.

they get paid by Ford but at a significantly discounted rate. However it is still better than no work.

Update - stopped in to the dealer today - talked to the mechanic. she is lookin pretty sad - all 4 wheels off so the mechanic can sit her on the ground - easier to get in the engine compartment. He tells me - ford says the engine has to come out but he tried something new - he pulled the tranny and most of the top of the motor and raised it up - says it gives just enough clearence to drop the bedplate - tight but doable. Man thats a lot of parts on the ground. anyway should be done monday. on my left front seal - he says he will put all new seals in the front axle " preventive maintainence" - i like this guy.

will keep updated

I never thought about taking my tires off to lower it down, thats a great idea! Wish I had thought of that when I did my turbo... 8 hours of standing on step stools and laying on top of the engine compartment

yep its as low as a car - he used the lift to hold it just off the ground but you could use wood under the rotors - it sure is a good idea for a long job.

well I don't know if its too late but you might want to ask how much it is to get some headstuds on while the motor is out.

Actually Liv - the motor never came out - he just took everything off the top - dropped the tranny and jacked the motor all the way up - it is tight but works - so he said anyway

ok last update - i hope - truck is done - bedplate o-ring replaced and all the gaskets / seals done in the front axle - my cost - $118.00. Fords cost - well over $5000 - according to the dealer. Im picking it up tonight - so we will see how that very tiny oil leak is doing now.

I've done several repairs on aftermarket warranty plans. The warranty people usualy have a flat rate scale they pay on, however, I've found that if I can speak to the same person when I call in I can get him to adjust his rates.

The flat rate is a little lower than my shop rate so I try to get them to meet me 1/2 way for the diff.

On a side note...

While the tech had the top of the motor apart, it sure would have been a good time for some studs or possibly an EGR delete.

IMO, of course.

The warranty repairs were done under Fords ESP program. The deductable i paid was for the axle repair not the engine. The engine was stripped on the top end but that didnt include the heads - the mechanic told me that ford states that the engine needs to come out to repair the bedplate seal and this was the fist time he attempted it with the engine in. He found by pulling the tranny and all the stuff off the top of the motor - it could be raised enough to drop the pan and bedplate. He figured it saved him close to 2 days of work. So now im home with the truck last night and looking under the hood and notice - maybe i just didnt notice before - but the upper 1/3 of the rad shroud is detachable - it looks like it has been modified to be removed, it is retained by small fasteners on both sides. I dont remember this before - i am a new owner - but it does not look factory but sure would make a belt change a lot easier - it opens up the entire area on top of the accesory drive area. Anyway can someone let me know if they are all like that or did my mechanic make this mod up.
thanks
