So when I accelerate and then let off the pedal I hear a grumbling noise that sounds like it could be exhuast related but cant tell. Its like, hit the gas, let off and hear bop, bop, bop, bop. Say it fast and you'll get the picture. What could it be.
Search "Turbo Fart", caused by excess boost pressure going back through the intake. It doesn't hurt anything, but if it does it a lot it could be a sign of your turbo sticking.

Thanks for the answer. It does it all the time. Today I noticed, only once so far, that the spool up seemed to take forever and the truck acted like it was going to stall. When it got going there was a huge cloud of black smoke out the back end. Last time this happened, I took it in and the dealer replaced the 2 injectors, the fuel pump, the turbo twice and the egr twice and the air filter. When I got the truck back my fuel economy went way down and there was a very noticable loss of power. I really don't want to have to take it back in.
are you out of warranty? You might think about going to non vgt. Also when was it that you took it in, or what flash do you have if you know? They might have done the flash wrong and thats what gave you these problems. It might be worth taking back in just to get the newest flash. Cost about $120 if your out of warranty.
Still under warranty. Going to have to take it in I guess. What is non vgt? This is my first diesel and I'm not a big automotive guy. What can I do to keep these turbo vanes from doing this regularly?
I don't know what flash I have and the last time it was in was probably a year to a year and a half back.

vgt = variable geometry turbo. You can do a search for a more detailed explanation, but basically you have turbo veins that control the flow of air to make the turbo spin faster at low rev's then it opens up at higher rev's
As far as I know you can't really lube them up effectively. Best thing to keep the turbo healthy is to drive it often and like you stole it.
When you take it in ask for the newest flash. After you get it the tranny will need to relearn it takes about 200 miles then your mileage should improve.

Do you let it idle often? If so you will need to do the high idle mod, instructions are in the tech folder. It is very inexpensive, all you need to purchase is a switch, 16 gauge wire and some wire connectors. If you don't have the wire and connectors already they are only a few dollars. I picked up a toggle switch from Pepboys for $6. The high idle mod will help prevent the build up of crud in your turbo.
