Heater for F 100

I looked up top under articles for some heater replacement ideas. I don't have a heater with my truck and am getting close to closing in the cab. Has anyone used a heater from something with good success for a replacement heater?? I have a 54 with 12 volt system.

Check the swap meets for a small box heater. I found one made by the Chupp Manufacturing Company that is only about 8x8 inches with doors that open and openings for defrost for 20 bucks. It works great and doesn't take up much room. Other than holes for the three mounting bolts you have to drill only two holes in the firewall for the heater hose connections. I believe these heaters may even still be available but obviously more expensive if you buy one new. I picked up some A/C tubing at NAPA and ran the defrost hose to my stock defroster ducts. I don't have a good picture of it but you can see it faintly mounted on the inside firewall in this one...

I have two for a '53 but you would have to change the motor to 12 V. That would probably be easy to do and a new motr would probably be a good idea as the 50 year old ones are most likely shot or about ready to go.

Later man...

I have an old 54 but it doesn't have a connection for the outlet tubes for the defrosters. I am now 12 v so I would need a new motor any way but that is over a hundred bucks. It may still be the best way to go for now. Just need to do something before it gets cold. I don't put mine away just because of winter.

Max-

You probably already know this, but if you are planning on adding air conditioning in the future you can buy a unit that has AC/Heat/Defrost. However, your talking over $600 for one of these setups. Just a thought.

I have the heater unit like the one Merten pictured. It needs a new heater core but they are $150 plus $50 core charge. Do any of you guys know of another type that will work and fit in with slight modification..rather than buying one from like MID50 ??

I used a core from a Explorer, 4.0L, fit really well, I had to adjust the holes in the heater box and the firewall but they aren't really that noticeable...... looks quite stock from inside the cab, even under the hood looks good........best thing it was free... customer insisted his was leaking and wanted it replaced.......hasn't leaked a drop since I put it in in May and it still looks new

Do you know if it ids a specific year Explorer, to ask at the parts store to match the old one up to. How far off were the holes?
Did they need to be widened or totally new ones drilled. Thanks for the help hope this saves some money as the ones in the book are expensive fro my 56

I think it was a 93 or 94, my rememberer isn't what it use to be they can't have changed too much over the years of 90-95 I would think......
I actually used the stock fresh air heater assembly ....then opened the two hose holes up to form one long hole pretty much top to bottom....you can't see the back of it anyway then I ran the rubber heater hoses thru the firewall to the hard line connections on the core........the core fit good...just never came out quite flush to the front of the heater box...some small strips of high density rubber fixed that.....I think I have some pics somewhere. I will try and find them and stick them in my gallery.
Very simple mod and now I can replace the core easier.....if I can just find my "mod" book where I write down all the "rodded" parts/years/part numbers I have added......haven't seen it since I cleaned the shop

added some pics in my gallery

No heater in mine, it will get parked (when it finally gets done) once the cold weather sets in.
