Exclamation 1994 E4OD tranny

i have a 94 flareside 4x4 and the tranny started to shift hard then i lost 3rd and 4th gear.what could this be? could i just get a rebuild kit? and would a tranny out of a 2x4 or diesel work in it? any help would be very nice i would like to get the truck up and going soon and i dont really want to buy a new tranny.

Could be a couple of things, not necessarily the tranny itself.

First thing check it for codes even if the CEL is not on.

Ford Fuel Injection How To Run a Self-Test (just in case you do not know how)

Tell us exactly what it does or doesn't do, when you say "then i lost 3rd and 4th gear" what do you mean? No gear at all, first second then nothing like neutral?

Hard shifting, slamming gears can be or is a normal reaction to a problem for that tranny, the pressure defaults to "high" all the time to help keep it from tearing itself up.

How well does your speedo work, needle steady at any given speed? Not working at all? Needle jumps at speeds or doesn't work at all until you get up to a given speed? All a sudden pegs to 80? That kind of thing, a steady needle does not prove the PSOM is working right however a varying or jumpy needle is a pretty good sign its not.

Will the tranny get "drive" if you get on the gas kinda firm?

Give us as much as you can to go on and check it for codes and let us know what you find if any. Include how many miles it has on it.

Valve bodys wear out too also causing hard shifts, and also being electronic other parts can be at fault, solenoid body maybe bad, there is more to a e4od tranny than just the hard parts.

your t/v(tranny kickdown) cable could be stuck.

E4OD has no kick down cable, fully electronic control.

The MPLS or position senors may be bad but ussually its a slip into neutral thing.

As for rebuild. These r not fun even with all tools needed.

i put the old carrier in with the gears i got out of an old bronco so it would match when in 4x4 . this one has the abs ring on it and it seemed to fix the shifting hard problem but still no third or fourth....might need to rebuild tranny because of the hard shifting ?and what gear ratio would this be. the pinion has 11 teeth and the ring gear has 39 teeth if i remeber right ill check tomorrow to make sure but i think thats it.

3:55 to 1 would be the ratio you take the ring gear and divide by the pinion

I'm almost afraid to ask this, but did you set up the gears properly or just put everything together and put the cover back on?

yeah i did just throw it all together but i do know that you have to have so much of the pinion on the ring gear or you'll have problems or break teeth on your pinion or ring gear
