not real familiar with all the ford trannys

ive been trying to learn all i can about the different trannys put in our trucks from other threads but i still cant get the hang of it..but i have a 92 f-150 xlt 4x4 5.8 liter engine thats automatic with overdrive. could somebody inform me about what tranny i have and any stuff i should know about it? when my tranny goes id like to put a 5 speed in it, any idea which 5 speed tranny would be easiest to put in it? and would i have to do any computer swapping or other electrical stuff? thanks for any info and help guys!

Yeah you have an E4OD. If you are really careful with your truck you can use an M5OD but you really want a ZF 5 speed because they are much stronger.

ZF was the second best thing I ever done to my truck. Go for it. It is just a good weekends worth of work.

so a ZF tranny will directly bolt up to my 351 block? and i wont have to do any rewiring? and is there any different types/models of ZF transmissions or is that the type/model?

It'll take a weekend if you have all the parts needed before you start . There were three versions of the ZF: small block gas, big block gas, and diesel. You will want the small block one for your 351 (S5-42, found in 300 six cylinder trucks and 351 trucks '88-'94). There was also a newer model (S5-47 '94-'97) that likewise had three configurations. I swapped manual to manual, so I'm not sure what is involved going from automatic to manual.

thanks for all the info! will the S5-42 be bolted to a 5.0 motor truck, years 88-94 also?

As far as I know, Ford never put the ZF behind the 5.0, it was only the 300 and 351 in F250s and heavier trucks (except for '88 F150s according to ZF) that were paired with the small block ZF from the factory.

There is a little bit of re-wiring, but it's mostly just un-wiring tho. :)

too, the parts truck idea worked out good for me. YMMV on that.

You'll need a manual computer (EEC) and a jillion other little things.

Like:
- whole pedal assembly, the automatic is plain ol' different :/
- manual steering column and speedometer block-off plate (want?)
- crossmember, the auto crossmember "can be made to work"
...(but, Ford changed it for a reason)
- flywheel and pilot bearing (I'm using a 6003 sealed ball bearing)
- clutch master cylinder and its line can be bought new for cheap
- etc

How serious are you about this swap? :)
If you're serious, first thing, get a full set of Ford Shop Manuals for
the year you'll be working with, they'll include the wiring diagrams.

id really like to swap it if i have the money when my auto tranny goes..having the money will probably be determining factor along with time..im sure you all know how it goes..lol
