Well, here I was in the middle of a intense 4x4 trail "The Whipsaw" had a moment of inattention combined with only 15 lbs pressure in 31 " ( low clearance) I hit a rock with the bottom of my front differential. It brought me to a complete stop, all appeared ok until got going again a clunking noise. I unlocked the hubs and it mostly went away but the problem was I was in deep and everyone in the group was going deeper. Checked it out and what had happened was the solid bang on the underside of the diff was enough to blow out two of the u-joint caps on the center fr axle u-joint!! Disconnected the front drive shaft, drove in 2 low for 30 k of crazy *** 4x4 road.
Probably got towed about 2-3 kms over all , there were places it was easier to stay hooked then to un hook and re hook every 50 feet. No cell service for 10 -20 miles either direction. excellent reason to not 4x4 alone, but if I had to abort and go back I could have made it alone, further on no.
Nice post, glad you made it out and had company. I blew my inner yoke on the front diff at the Badlands. Turning and punching the skinning peddal did it. Turned out I spit out a capp from a U-joint and that gernaded the yoke. I was also able to unlock the front and make it out with just the locker in the rear.
I learned to tack weld the caps into the yokes, especiall that PITA front inner. No probs since.
