Thumbs up Engine Paint

Hi All,

Can anyone tell me if its necessary to use high temp paint on the
engine block? I want to use an epoxy primer and then my color.
Except for around the exhaust ports engine should not get much over
180 to 200-210 degrees. (if it does you have bigger problems than
paint) Anyway, If anyone has used regular auto paint on their engine block with no problems, please let me know. Thanks Guys & gals.

Gary

Nope, lots of people use body paint. In that regard, I'd like to nominate this as the prettiest flathead I've ever seen (friend of mine's fresh build, dyno'd at 210 HP, getting a blower next week). This is after a couple dyno runs, no burned paint.

I used the POR-15 engine paint kit 10+ year ago on my F-2's flat six and I highly recommend it. I don't really take care exterior of the engine but when I do give it a quick wash it looks almost as good as the day I applied the paint. The area around the plugs is a little beat but again, if I kept it clean I am sure it would still look good.

The POR-15 kit comes with everything you need to paint the engine, cleaner, primer and paint. Unlike regular auto paint, this paint is made for engines.

BTW, Ross, that is one pretty engine.

Nice looking engine there, Ross. I'm almost ready to tear into my spare 8BA (optimistically today) and wondered about painting the engine myself. POR 15 offers the kit in certain engine colors, as does Eastwooods. What about custom colors? I'm thinking of using the same Green as my body color. Is that kinda what Ross's friend did?

The engine is Bill Boomer's (4TFord over on MSN), he told me the engine color but I lost it already. He picked it out of the Ditzler catalog as I recall. It's a quality body paint, but I believe his car will be black. Needless to say, you need to clean the block really well to get adhesion with that kind of paint. And with a Roadrunner blower on top, will anyone be looking at the block?!

All the major rod shops use standard catalized paint. Just be sure the block is surgically clean (solvent wash, soap and water wash, sandblast, prepsol. If the white cloths used with the prepsol aren't perfectly clean, do it again.) Allow the paint to cure thoroughly before firing it up.

Thanks Guys

I`m rebuilding the 312 and want to paint it the same color as my exterior paint.
Any particular type paint or will any paint hold up to the heat generated by
engine? I`m thinking some will hold up better than others.
Need some expertise here. Thanks.

A 2K (2 part paint and catalyst) paint is best, I'd expect a water based paint would also be good. Trapped solvent is the enemy, hence cure for as long as possible. Whatever you are using for the exterior should work fine. When I used to build racing engines, we'd paint them with plain ol Rustoleum in the rattle cans.
