Is the timing Adjustable on a 97 351 ???. I thought with these computers the timing was adjusted through the computer. Sorry not real familiar with Fords anymore. My last truck was a F250 Diesel and before that, i was a CHEVY fanatic, mostly for HOTRODS, had a HOTROD 85 Chevy truck
Hook the clip to the (#1 cylinder)plug wire, which would be the passanger front. Connect positive and negative to battery. disconnect the SPOUT(spark output) which will either be right on the connector for the distributor on on the drivers firewall. Its just a clip with two prongs that goes onto the connector, not connecting to anywhere else.
Get a bootleg or timing wrench and loosen the distributor just enough so you can move it. Go under any mark your numbers and marks on your crankshaft damper. I used a dab of white acrylic paint and then wipes some off after it was drying so just the markings would appear white.
Turn on the truck and let it warm up to normal operating temp, which is when the t.stat opens up. If you dont have an aftermarket temp gauge, you can tell by the stock or when the radiator hose gets hot.
With my 302, put the gun between the pulley tensioner and the alternator. WEARING A GLOVE, turn the distributor until its where you want it set. You'll get shocked if you dont wear the glove, and its hard to grasp without taking the intake tubes off. Turn the truck off, hold the distributor while you tighten it (its a good idea to mark somewhere on the dist. to intake for a reference line) Recheck the timing after its tightened.
Reconnect the spout and your done.
I threw on a set of GT-40 heads and did my timing last night. I gapped my plugs at .055 and advanced the timing at 12.5 Once i get a vaccum gauge, I should be able to get the timing up to 13-13.5. Stock, I bet you could go 11-12. once you start hearing pinging, back it off just a little.
If you're getting shocked turning the distributor, you need better/new plug wires. I've never worn a glove, and never been shocked. I don't like wearing gloves near a running engine...
It should be just a gray, plastic plug on the driver's side fender, under the hood, near the firewall on your truck. If not, it should be within 6" or so of your distributor on its wiring harness. It looks like it caps off a 2-wire harness, but is in reality a jumper.
Great ! Thannx, I know where that is, I just wasnt sure what it was for. As I said, I am/was a chevy and mopar guy. Ford are easier to get what you want. I dont think the 2500 Chevy's are as good as the 250 Fords, etc...
