I just don't see how you get 5 mpg better than I do on the highway How is is possible that these engines can differ that much? My mpg is at 1900 rpms approx (68 or so), one person, no load, flat roads.
I average 14mpg now due to the modifications I've made and a custom tune from diablosport.
Put your foot in it though and it goes back to normal.
Have about 3000kms (1875miles) on the odometer now. Even with all the converstion factors from kilometers and litres to miles and gallons it works out to 15-16mpg. Others have said that after the break-in period I should get even better. But hey..I'm glad with this now! But mind you up here we drive no faster than 62.5 mph (100kph).
I would guess you worked that out with the Canadian gallon 4.54l vs. the US gallon which is about 3.97l. If so then it comes out roughly to 12.5mpg to 13.3mpg when using the US gallon. That way it keeps it comparable to others on the board.
Thats what I've been told. Its a great truck and I think we will be pleased with it for the next few years. Used to have a Navigator with the 5.4 in it. We got 21mpg on that. That was a great unit too, but this V10 has alot more spunk. Can't wait until next spring and go camping with it. I figure our 23ft TT will be just "flying" along right behind!!!!
I see that as being completely possible, based on the speed he is reporting.
My pure highway mileage is over 14mpg. I fill at the same station, and calculate by hand. My highway driving has been from 5000ft to 9000ft and everything between, including alot of hard climbs and drops (up and down the rim). The speed is from 35mph to 65mph......... and I set the cruise for 5 over on the 55 and 65's. I even get up over 80 on occassion, when I have to pass something in a hurry (passing zones are not real long, and the flatlanders drive like they are terrified in the mountains).
On our last fishing trip, it was blowing real hard all the way up and back. My mileage was down 1mpg on average.
I think that it is completely dependent on how you drive. On the highway, it is cruise control only. I am not a real aggressive driver, but do not drive slow.
I have a feeling that the mileage would be less if I was driving on 40, or down in the Valley, where the freeways go to 75. A brick is a brick.
Speaking of mileage I just re-ran a spreadsheet I had made a few years ago that compares the cost of driving a diesel vs. the V10. Scary! With diesel costing more than gas now it works out that with a mix of town, towing and highway it would take close to 75,000 miles to recoup the cost of buying the diesel. That doesn't factor in the extra costs of oil changes. With the added headaches of living in the north it sure makes me wonder about my decision to order the 6.4 in my new 09. The bonus of the diesel though is I get better range when towing. I live in a rather remote area and when I had my V10 I had to think ahead a little more as to where I could fuel up as my safe range towing was only 120 to 140 miles. It is sure enough to get me thinking about changing my order to a v10 before it gets scheduled and gets a build date.
It only takes 75,000 miles? That seems out of whack considering what kind of mileage I've been reading about for the 6.4L. Seems there is only a couple mpg difference between the two. I know fuel here has been 15 - 25% higher for diesel and the gas engines seem to only get 20% less mpg. Seems the difference in fuel costs would never really factor into it, like it's pretty much a wash.
the v10 might get better milage than the 6.4...in the city i get 9-10 mpg at worst when im in bumper to bumper...my neighbors 6.4 gets 8 and i have a long bed drw
I took and average of 14mpg for the diesel and 10 for the V10. Just a rough average of different types of driving I do. Current price of gas here is $1.17/liter and diesel is $1.26. Comes out to $4.43 and $4.77 per US gallon in Cdn dollars. Spread that over 75,000 miles and it gives a difference of $7,665.43. The cost for the diesel is roughly $7,500 over the V10 in Canada. The higher the cost of fuel gets (as long as the % between gas & diesel is constant) the sooner the difference is made up. There are too many variables to do it with any degree of accuracy though. Problem for me is I only drive on average 12k to 13k miles a year as we get bussed to work. So it will take about 6 years to make up the difference.
As for the two questions above about mileage the majority are now reporting mileage comparable to the 6.0 with the newest flash. They were pretty dismal at first.
Gotcha. That makes more sense. Here, where I live, although the price of each has come down considerably, diesel was considerably more than gas. The difference for you isn't as wide a margin as it is here. Diesel came down a lot in the last week or two, but it's consistently been 15%, sometimes more of a difference. I see you've got half that as the difference between the two, which would definitely make the mileage (75,000) you gave more accurate than it would be for me. I too don't drive many miles. I think we just broke 18,000 and it's 3.5 years old so my truck would likely be a rusted heap before I could justify the price difference.
Either way the V10 should start getting more and more support from the average consumer the way things are going. We kinda got a little off topic though.
