hi original post about my battery light stayin on, well i tried the test with turning dome light on while truck running and turning off engine and the light went dim. so alternater is working now back the square 1 here is my question does outside air temp have anything to do with how soon light comes on because in the cool air of the morning it take much longer for the light to come on than in the heat of the day in which it comes on much sooner. also i might add that its likei keep an eye on the time and place the light comes on and it is almost within reason the same place everyday. does this give you any ideas as what it might be
You either have a bad alternator or bad batteries. The light test only tells you it it producing voltage, but not how much. Dome lights don't require much power. Chances are, your alternator is not generating enough power to charge both batteries, there is also a good chance that your batteries are on their way out as well. Most parts places will check both for free. Make sure you unhook you batteries before you check them and replace both of the batteries if you replace any.
it has been checked both batteries and alternator they check out in know what your saying im asking for things that can go wrong other than the obvious because ive checked everything
I'm not sure what the light is hooked to that's makes it come on, but it could be a bad connection there. Start with the plug on the alternator and check the wires coming out. Maybe have someoone watch the dash light while engine is running and you wiggle the wires to see if anything makes the light go out.
On my gas engine, the batt lamp is wired to field on the alternator. If that wire has power, the lamp is off (it must have power on both sides with the key on), when the field doesn't have power, the lamp grounds back through the alt. There are several fuseable links near the battery, I believe several of those went back the alt, 2-3 to the charge wire, but I think there might be a link to the field.
Looking over that page, I think all three pins need 12v. This would be a good place to start. Hook up your DMM, and look for voltage. If you see more than 1v difference start checking the wires.
Get your batteries tested or try starting off one at a time (disconnect one). I'm guessing you have one bad battery so the good one is providing starting power but the bad one is pulling your voltage down enough to set off the battery light.
i have the same thing happen to my 6.0
the alternator checked out good and both batteries are brand new . gonne try what zx250 sugested about wriggling some wires .
