Off brand help?!

Hey,
My neighbor has a 2000 Mitsubishi Eclipse RS with a factory radio. I disconected the battery to clean the battery posts. but when the battery was reconnected her radio display says "code" and her radio doesnt play.
Does any body know what the code to be entered is and how to do it?
My neibhor says this happened before and the dealership charged her a lot of money to reset it for her since she is on diability and I don't have the money to bring it to the dealership for her. So does anyone out there know how to fix this?

I have a feeling it's like the GM system, you have to have a person call an automated number. Entering a dealer code and the radio lock code, then they give you the unlock code. Some clubs/groups/organizations are in enough with the dealers to have this information and can get the code for you. I used to do them for free at work, I had Chevy's number and my local dealers code (we did a lot of business with them).

If its that expensive, i think it would be cheaper to install an aftermarket deck in it. Just an idea though.

Yea you need the code to reactivate the radio. My wifes 01 Montero sport is that way. IIRC I had to like turn the key on and off a few times push the brake pedal a few times then enter the code the dealer gave us to make the radio work again. It was crazy.

Have you checked the glove box/ owners manual for a card or a "printed-page" in the manual.

When I've had to remove and re-install similar make radios, the "code" was in the g'box (course it was 1st owner).

Good idea the owners manual should have the code. Sometimes its the last 4 or 6 numbers of the VIN or radio serial number.

I'll have to poke around in the glove box and manual. Never thought it would be there.

The procedure should be listed in the owners manual. If the code isn't written down there, follow the instructions below that I pulled off a Mitsubishi forum:

1.) remove the panel around the climate controls and stereo - this is actually much easier than it sounds (at least to me...tried doing that with all of my previous cars, to no avail). just unscrew the two screws below the controls (you might not see them unless you get down on the floor of the car), then gently pry around the trim that goes around the stereo and climate controls. there's two clip type of things near the top of this panel that will probably both pop out when you pull this piece off, just make sure you're ready to catch them/find them if they do. you'll probably also have to disconnect a plug that connects to the hazard light control
2.) look for serial number on your radio and write it down. mine was on the top of the radio, it was exposed as soon as I pulled the trim piece off. I think I've heard that it can be on the back of the radio sometimes, so if you don't see it, be prepared to pull the radio out. that's just a couple screws though, nothing hard.
3.) once you've got the serial number, go ahead and reconnect the hazard light plug and put the panel back on.
4.) take this serial number to the dealer, and tell them you need the radio code. they shouldn't give you any crap about this - my nearest dealer is known for being kinda sleazy and they even looked it up for me for free, BUT do be prepared with your license, registration, perhaps even title, that sort of thing to prove you do in fact own the car. they may ask.
5.) assuming you already reset the radio by leaving the key in "on," etc. enter the code they give you. do be aware that for some reason they may have two different codes for your radio (they did for mine) so I would enter the code the 1st time in the lot to make sure it works
6.) you should be all set! make sure you write the code down and keep it where you won't lose it so if this happens again you don't need to go through the whole thing again.
