Anybody got advice on running a 460 with stock front supension? Is it possible or will I need to go to a IFS? I am looking at upgrading my 272 to a 460 but have concerns with the added weight and other fit concerns. Front is basicly stock but I have added a 3' drop axle, reverse eye main leave and have removed 2 leaves for the stance. Any help is appreciated.
I'm planning on running a 460 in my '56 as well... Although along with that a Heidts IFS is going in...
Not sure what the 272 weighs but I read somewhere the 460 is around 720#... So my guess with your spring pack missing a couple of leaves it would be sitting on the bump stops... just a guess...
My 56 had a 460 in it when I bought the truck. The engine is very heavy and the stock springs and bushings took a beating. Other than that all was good.
BTW - if you decide to run a C4 Corvette IFS, forget about the 460...it won't fit between the A-arms (don't ask me how I know).
I don't know how accurate this is but here is a weight chart I found. Ford Engine Weights
The 460 must be 100/150 lbs heavier. That doesn't seem like a lot but would have a big effect on the front suspension I'm sure.
Depending on how it's dressed... alum vs cast intake, headers vs manifolds, a/c, p/s etc... a 460 will tip the scales between 700 and 800 #s. it's a heavy lady... but will pull the house off the foundation if your chain is big enough...
I have a '56 with a 460/c6, on a solid axle front end. I have a stock axle and springs but the main leaf is reversed. It is at about the same ride height as your truck is now. I added a sway bar kit, and it handles ok(would be better with some stiffer tires). It seems to ride pretty good as well. I did have 2 leaves removed, but I ended up putting them back in. I also had to trim down the bump stops to increase suspension travel. Hope that helps.
What type of drop axle you have? if you have the tube axle from Mid-Fifty or CCP the engine will be to heavy. When I had an issue with my axle they asked what size engine I had and said someone tried running a 460 with the axle and the weight wouldn't allow the camber to be set correctly. I would call the company you purchased the axle from unless its an original one that was stretched that may be OK however, I don't know for sure.
