I recently picked up an 1989 5.0 HO engine and aod trans from a mark V,just finished stripping all the fuelie stuff of it and the trans.the engine only has 146xxxkms so around 90000 miles.so I figure I should be able to give a trashing until the winter before pulling it again for a rebuild and bore.I am going to us an edlbrock performer rpm intake and a holley 650 with vacume secondaries.I figure this should wake the old truck up considering the stock 302's 150 or so hp.I am leary of how long the poorly sifting C-4 will hold up but thats the price to pay.I also am wondering if anyone would have any insight into what gearing the truck may have came with,302/C4/9inch.I haven't checked to see if was posi or not, will spin both on dirt and none on pavement.
Nice find on the HO. More than likely not a locker. more than likely as far as i know, it prolly has 383 or 411 gears. I would go with the AOD trans myself.
Make sure it is or is not a HO-so when you put in a non efi distributor you don't eat the dist. gear and or cam.
Check the sticker in the door frame on the cab, see if it lists an axle code-provided the gearing hasn't been changed.
Only other way is to jack it up(block your front wheels-safety!), so both rear wheels are off the ground, mark a tire and the pinion yoke, then turn and count rotations(make sure both tires rotate equally-if they do on their own, prolly a limited slip diff.)
Consider the overdrive-I had an 89 GT cobra, aod and 3.73 gears, what a fun car-it was tough to beat. Decent highway rpms, and all kinds of get up and GO!
thanks for the quick info guys,it is an HO it came comlete with plenum and all wiring.but I'm just using from the heads down.I will check the door for the sticker, but I noticed last night the pinion seal is leaking and theres a fair bit of backlash there so I think I'll pull the third member for as long as that takes and do it on the bench.that way I'll have it fixed and know for sure what I'm running for gears.
