i have to replace everything but the backing plates so my ? is will anything off the 49 rear end fit thay are new or would the price to buy all new be that much cheaper then going to disc brakes
Sorry
Nothing from the 49 brakes are interchangeable with the ones on the 9".
I would think the parts to repair the brakes you have would be much cheaper than switching to discs but if you want discs now is the time to do it.
New shoes, cylinders and spring kits should not be very expensive
I'm pretty sure I have read on this site that you can replace the backing place on the 9" with the stock '49 backing plates and use your stock '49 rear. If you haven't already, do a search, you should be able to find the information you're looking for.

I have also heard that 48-56 F1, F2, and F3 front backing plates are interchangeable and that F1/F2 rears will fit the later nine inch but I have not tried it personally...
I recently swapped my 53 brakes onto my 59 nine inch and they fit perfectly. At some point in the early 60s I think a switch was made to wider drums so I'm guessing the skinny drums would not mate to the akles correctly.
BTW: Cost me $170 total for new drums, wheel cylinders and pads as mine were shot, still much cheaper than any disc conversion I could find.
While you are at it you should consider adding the self adjusting mechanism. I think Ford went to self adjusting brakes on the trucks starting in 1966. It easy enought to add them to the earlier set ups
ill pull some stuff apart tomaarow sucks got 10 days off work and i'm broke till 2011 but i can play with the small cheap stuff if the brakes dont work thay can wait at least things are now going back togather nothing left to take apart and i mean nothing
Go to the search feature and put in “f100 rear brake shoes”, lots of info.
At risk (as usual) of being wrong and subject to correction and also relying on an old memory I think that up to 72 half ton will bolt on and 73 and up have the wider brake shoes and you have to change the backing plates (drill axle flange for bigger bolts I think) and drums.
With a limited budget I would think that you could buy everything (backing plates, drums, springs etc) from a wrecking yard off a 9 inch cheaply.
i am using a disc kit from b c bronco on my 9 inch.just buy the brackets and round up the rest salvage.it uses dodge truck rotors and gm calipers .can use s10 front calipers or 80s olds/buick rear calipers that have the parking brake levers built in. easy enough for me. i just went salvage for the cores on calipers, then traded them in for rebuilt units. also grabbed the e -brake cables from the donor car.
