Overheating

I have a 2005 F350 FX4 Crew Cab 6.0. We wne tout to dinner this evening, about a ten mile drive one way, and about two miles into our return trip I heard this roaring noise and noticed my tempature was close to going out of the normal zone. The tempature then went back to normal, but as I brgan climbing a mild grade the noise returned and the tempature went back up. Once on flat ground the tempature returned to normal and the fan cut off. When it cools down I will check the coolant level. The only thing differenrt from normal is we just went through Tropical Storm Faye which left a lot of water. The road to our house is under nearly two feet of water. We drove through the water once last night and three times today before this overheating started. I don't know if there is a connection, but wanted to throw that out there. Any ideas, other than low coolant, that might cause this condition? Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Randy

It may be as simple as a clogged / dirty radiator (air side). Do you think driving through the water may have put dirt in between the radiator fins? Wash it out w/ a hose if it is dirty.

It could also be as simple as a bad thermostat or bad temperature sensor. I have heard some claim to have experienced a collapsed lower radiator hose (they do not have internal support wire), although I haven't heard this one for a long time.

After these, you get more serious - bad water pump (fins split where they go around the shaft), then you get into the serious stuff (EGR cooler head gasket, etc).

By all means, keep an eye on the coolant level in then degas bottle, but also keep an eye out for the white residue around the degas bottle.

How many miles on the truck? Do you tow and, if so, what weight and how often? What was the ambient temp in your area at the time?

Debris clogging the radiator fins is plausible after a storm like that and driving through deep water.

Mark and RussThanks for the information. I picked up two gals of Motorcraft Gold today and some distilled water. I put 1/2 gal of coolant and 1/2 gal of water in the overflo tank. It hasn't overheated since. I guess being down 1 gal of fluid might be enough to cause the problem. If the probelm persist I will look at your suggestions. By the way, the truck has 80,000 miles on it, the ambient tempeture last night was around 85 degrees F and I do tow occasionally, a 2,400 lb trailer with a 3,400 car. Thanks again.Randy

I would wonder "why" it was down that low to begin with....
