Removed compressor today and got new belt for non a/c which works fine but you you have to remove the pulley. Thinking about getting a compressor at salvage yard 50 dollars. From what I have read they may be better if they are original factory unit than re-bilt ones. Any ideas. thanks terry
most junke yard dog compressors have set for several years corroding away internally. once the a/c system loses it's charge air moisture moves in.
JY dog not worth bringing home
get a new Motorcraft if you're looking for a long lived system, rebuilt MC is 2nd choice. cheapy rebuild if just for a couple seasons.
even more critical is the clean installation. complete flush, new accumulator, new muffler filter cans, new orfices, new condensor and evaporator if the system has had "Black Death"
A/C was working great before compressor locked up . Went on small trip and smelled burning was belt slipping over comp. pulley. Oh well its a 1990 I bought new I didnt want to spend much on it if I dont put used one on a I might just leave air off then again I might just put on a used one and give it a shot. thanks terry
If it locked up, most likely from lack of lubrication, then you have "Black Death" as 96_4wdr mentioned above. I suffered the same some years back - burnt up belt, etc. The compressor vanes have a Teflon like coating that separates from friction/heat. This black 'gunk' gets spewed all through the system, clogging orifices and generally requiring a complete system tear down/flushing.
I took the opportunity to convert to r134a and bought all my retro-fit A/C stuff, including a new compressor, from Arizona Air. After 6 years, everything is still working well.
Compressor I took off did not have any black gunk drain from it or anything. I converted to r-134A about 10 years ago with great results.I may just stick on a used compressor and give it a try. thanks terry
