I picked up a portable GPS (Tom Tom) for the wife on Friday because I'm having to drive all over South Texas this week and could use it myself just to see how it works (turned out to be a good thing when I got re-routed from San Antonio to Victoria)
I noticed the GPS disagrees with my speedo by about 2 - 3 mph. Anyone know how accurate the speed on these GPS units are? Should I try and use the new AE feature that lets you change tire sizes to adjust my speedo to make them both match?
If so, what do I need to input in the AE? I'm running stock 265/75/16, and the truck is 2 - 3 mph faster than the GPS unit.
Thanks Greg. What's got me wondering is I've heard in the past that these trucks are off a little, and I got the upgrade to change my speedo for free. So if the GPS is right I figure why not. If it's wrong, I'd rather not screw with it.

Oops, forgot to answer this question.
Go to the website of your tire manufacturer. Look up the tire specs and find the exact overall diameter for your tire. For example, BFG A/T's in your size are 31.7" OD. AE calibrates in .25" increments, so you would push the arrow button until you see 31.75".
I was wondering that. The last time I was around any GPS stuff was when it was still a secret military only thing that was so large it had to be carried around in the new Hmmve's, and it took 2 of them to shoot an azymith to pinpoint the bad guys. This thing's not much bigger than a deck of cards.
My speedo is now dead on with my GPS thanks to AE. I can verify that by driving past the speed trap signs that the DPS puts out around town.

Thanks Curtis. That's the info I was looking for. Now I just need to explain to the wife how I will be keeping her new toy for a few extra days and I need to find one of those signs you're talking about.
Great idea with the speed trap sign. I've seen those a million times. How much you want to bet I won't see one for 6 months now?
Boy, we gotta get you guys out on the farm!! There is GPS technology available giving us +/-1" accuracy from one pass to the next, and it'll drive the tractor too!! You just sit back and watch!
I'd trust the GPS moreso than your truck. Or average it out and be close.
I agree with all of the above. My garmin nuvi750 is dead on with my speedo that I corrected. It also matches all the speed trap signs like curtis goes through
I have also had someone pace next to me. I have even had 2 gps units, my garmin and another tom tom, when me and my buddies went on a road trip. They were exactly on together as well. Its correct

I've read articles on that, but it doesn't offer much benefit for my hay. Generally speaking though, you deal with less obstructions between you and the satellite and you're probably going just a tad slower than 70 mph. I doubt the unit I have has that kind of accuracy, and I don't know how speed would affect it.
If you are working your fields that fast I need to get some pointers from you, because 5 - 7 mph is about the fastest I can do anything light duty.

Thanks for the reminder: I purchased AE 11 months ago and I better download the upgrade for 6.1 before the time limit runs out.....
