I have near 100k miles on my 2002, I looked in my resevoir and its full. But it cranks more than my other power-strokes before it starts. Cold or warm it doesnt matter. My question is can I clean this resevoir and install new oil? I have a 95 psd also it runs ruff for a bit after starting warm or cold. Is there a filter or screen in there, How do you drain it? What do you guys think?
thanks tony
I wont address the rough-running, but it is easy to drain the HPOP reservoir. I have a suction gun that I use. Just drain the oil, then pull the plug on the reservoir and suck the oil out using the suction gun...then refill with clean oil.
Mine and my dad truck crank differently. His cranks slowly and starts quicker. Mine spins like a top but takes a bit longer. We have same truck. Wierd how both trucks start. They even sound a little differently also. Mine is quieter his is louder. I guess they are all different.
I suck out my HPOP everytime. Don't make a difference. My dad never had done his hpop suction thing.
Never hurts to change the oils though. I think you are fine(without hearing it)

It won't hurt to suck out the oil out of the HPOP (many folks do it when they change their oil) but you might as well do a full oil change while you are at it.
Taking longer to start can be from many factors. Two that come off the top of my head are oil & batteries. The injection system has to reach 400 PSI if I remember correctly to fire the injectors, so you oil pressure is building up as you crank her over. An oil change can make a difference if you have alot of miles on the oil.
Batteries that are starting to get weak can also take it longer to crank over.
Might as well change out the fuel filter while you are at it. The owners manual says every 15K IIRC.
because if you dont it looks likes a volcano exploded under your hood!
Now see, I knew this. Not going in to details, but I knew this. A volcano is good, but I was thinking of one of them oil rigs when it blows oil out the top of the rig.
my batteries are new and tested, when that didn't solve the problem. A fresh oil change had no affect on it either. Fuel filter didn't help, glow-plugs and relay tested everythings good. Maybe thats the best it will get. On the other note I changed my transmision sensor and still have my romp when I start my 95. I did check the injectors for oil coming out when started, they all lokked good and even. My romp is gone with the valve covers off but comes back when they are on. The harness pins look good but that probably is where the problem for mine is.
