I got a quote from Radiator.com for $400 for a new three core radiator. Radiator.com is an internet clearing house. When you go on their web site they have a robot that asks questions, making is look like you're talking to a real person. At the end it's ask you for your phone number so one of their techs can call you. When I did this I got a automated call back that connected me to a local radiator supplier. It's kind of a hokey system but if you get a real person that's local I guess it's not all that bad.
I got my used early 70's dodge car rad for $125.00 tested and confirmed in good shape. Slips right in the stock rad mount although it is a little shorter. I also checked Radiator.com but when I spoke to a human being, they said that they couldn't help me? Maybe the local radiator supplier that is affiliated with them just didn't have anything that would fit.....
If its for a V8 I have one listed in the classifieds section for sale. Make me an offer, I'll ship it from Zip Code 37601 so you'd have to cover the cost.
I had called a few vendor's USRadiator.com, Radiator.com, etc.. seem most of them quote me at or around $400+, add shipping and tax if needed.. So..$450-$500...!???
Local Radiator shop wants $450 to recore it.
Vintage Ford near Sacramento, Ca has them listed at $395..and looking into LMC.. it is listed at $249.95.. Thanks Bobj !!!
Looks like a winner.. Will call them tomorrow and verify that I am good with this part..
I bought a radiator for my '48 from LMC Truck and am very pleased with it. The only "issue" I had was the mounting slots needed to be lengthened just a bit so the bolts would line up with the nuts in the core support. But for the price I couldn't beat it.
I have a used one out of a 48 or 49 that has the big style cap on it. I'm not real sure of it's condition but it looks pretty good externally and internally. I live in Northern California. Let me know if your interested. Got any parts to trade maybe?
Here are a couple of pictures of the one I have mounted in the truck. Keep in mind, I am running a 302 instead of the flathead, so I ordered the I6 radiator. I also have a Spal electric fan mounted to it.
This is just a Stocker.. everything on it is stock, only about 47k on the odometor... I have rebuilt the fuel system, and now working on the cooling.. Getting hard to find parts for the Flat 6's.. looking for a water inlet (Thermostat Housing).. have tried may online and vintage retail stores.. anyone got a 226 6cyc T-Stat Housing ?
Had to send the water pump to Cardone to get it rebuilt. I hope that is it for the hard to find parts..
I hate to ask an sort of off-topic question, but I was wondering if the stock rad for the 223 will do it? I mean, I know it was made for it, but the fan only has four blades and there is not fan shroud; I've had overheating issues with cars before and now I'm paraniod, do you think the stock rad, fan, and no shroud is good enough? I live in a relatively hot climate, too.
(not to mention, one time I took a fan shroud off of my trans am and it started gettin real hot until I put the shroud back on, then got better.)
P.S. I can't believe that stock rads are that much!!??!
mOROTBREATH - I understand your concerns and that is why I've considered fabbing up a shroud for my '48. I have an electric fan mounted to the radiator for my application (see pictures in this thread) because you want all of the air through the radiator to be pulled by the fan. However, the radiator is only one part of the coolant system, albeit a major part, so we have to make sure the entire "system" is in good condition for proper cooling.
Yea, the price of radiators is expensive these days. I suppose we can blame that on the cost of copper and brass unless you are going with an aluminum one.
