I am helping a friend on a truck resto project and he built a 514 BB for it. I was wondering what I should be looking for as far as total advance. I have the base timing set at 12 BTDC, seems to start and idle well. Total mech. advance gets me up to I beleive around 40 and with vacuum advance up to 60. I know this is way too high, but was looking for some input to get a baseline setting to work off of. Thanks for any and all input.
Justin
you sure about 40 and 60?
initial should be 14 ish.. total 32 or so..maybe a bit more.
aluminum heads back it off a bit, dont need that much unless your building a dyno queen. if your runnin alcohol up it a bit.
Yes I am sure on the 40 and 60 numbers. The distributor we have is an HEI unit for BB Fords. I am pretty certain that it needs to be recurved. The truck this engine is in has a manual trans. and 3.55 gears. I am thinking that my friend may need to re gear this thing in order for the engine to stay in a drivable power band. We just got the engine fired up this last sunday and haven't driven it yet. It has ported cast heads. The engine builder that helped my friend with the porting is no longer working at the shop that did the engine work, so I have been recruited to help get this project wrapped up. I had figured on the total advance being in the 30's somewhere, but wasn't sure on a good base timing spec. Thanks Again, Justin
