anyone got an AOD tranny sitting in their garage that is ready to go to work? I have a buddy who has a truck, and is wanting to get into fourwheeling, but his tranny is shot. Shoot me a price, and I will let him know.
The AOD is not a great choice for a 4x4. 1ST gear is not very low and the shift pattern is 1st, drive, OD. There is no selectable 2nd gear. And the early AOD had rear bearing oiling problems. The AOD-EW or 4R70W would be a better. The W stands for wide ratio and gives a good 1st gear ratio. Bauman has a lot of good info on it on there web site. There is a company called Lentech out of Canada that makes a correct shifting valve body.
I think some small blocks and the I300 used the C6. It would have to be the small block bolt pattern. A C4 would be OK too if you aren't pulling lots of horsepower and it has less power loss in the tranny.
The C6 and C4 don't have overdrive if you do a bunch of road miles.
Ford put the C-6 behind darn near any motor you can get in that era and is one of the strongest truck tranies out there (short of an allison :-) but like del said, they don't have overdrive.
The AOD is acctually based on the original C-6 design however they don't hold up to much abuse like Jack said. They can however be modified to take much more but then it just boils down to how much and where you wanna spend your dollars.
The nice thing about the AOD is the design of an overdrive auto non computer controled tranny. But the tranny did have it's short falls. As Duane said you can up grade the AOD with 4R70 parts and Lenteck valve body and have a really good tranny. Or you can just get a 4R70 and use Bauman's computer.
But you can also use the E4OD(C-6 with overdrive) with the Bauman computer.
the problem with the E4OD is they put them behind a diesel and they just weren't built for it and they had alot of failures giving them a bad rap. But behind a small block they were a good solid tranny.
The E40D in Mule had some trouble. Seems ifin ya are on a long trip goin thru hilly country, off un on, ya have ta remember not to turn the od off and back on while out on the road at speed. Takes out a shift solenoid. And the one it takes out is part of a bank of them so the whole bank had to be replaced. Or so's I was told.
But that is a monster tranny. Basicly a C-6 with an OD.
