Ready to add fluids

Getting ready to fire up the 352W with a C4 tranny. Any info on the following would be appreciated:
  1. Recommendation on antifreeze and approximate capacity for a "50 F1 style Walker radiator and the engine.
  2. Type of AT fluid and the capacity for a C4 tranny minus the external cooler.
All suggestions and appreciated.

I think that; (subject to any and all possible errors and a poor memory)

50 / 50 mix antifreeze / water is good for -34 F
probably around 3 gallons total

newer ATF is universal, for all trans, maybe 6 quarts if the convertor is full otherwise 8 qts.

Just keep dumping until things run over (smile)

Hi Woodsman,

Hey it looks like you are gettin gready to start up here sometime soon. I got back to you on your "LAST" electrical question but noticed this post as well.

I am running a 390 FE with a C6. The FE has a built on recovery tank, but I ended up putting in two gallons of straight (as opposed to the pre-diluted you can buy) coolant then adding water as it opened up. It took about two gallons of water to top off after it was warmend up a few times.

BUT, I wasn't sure if you had had your transmission completelyrebuilt or what. When I had mine rebuilt, I put in a new torque converter with it. And all told to fill the torque converter and bring it up to proper level took 13 yes THIRTEEN quarts. The C4 is a little smaller, but I'd have plenty of Transmission Fluid on hand. If you don't use it you can always return it.

J!

Edit note: I just looked up the refil capacity for your C4 in my 66 Ford Manual and it's 10.25 Quarts - without the cooler.

Type F? I put in STP transmission fluid for vehicles 2005 and earlier. I hope that does it. Thanks to all for your inputs.

Type F was recommended back in the day. I used it in my C4 as well. I believe the new universal will also work. Just best to use the same type for all of it.

Back in the days when the C4 and C6 transmissions were built, and the comparable GM 350 and 400 transmissions built (mid 60s to late 80s) they required type specific fliuds. The GM transmissions required Dexron, and the Ford transmissions Type F or Mercon. I'm not sure which was the culprit company, but if you used the wrong fluid in your transmission - from the other company - it used to eat the seals and rubber parts.

Today's transmission fluid is universal and can be used in all transmission types. Also, I believe that the old manual transmissions that used to use SAE 90 gear oil, can also use the new automatic transmission fluid, and new manual transmissions do in fact use automatic transmission fluid for improved lubrication at temperature and better cooling.

53OTM is right though...don't mix fluid types. Stay with the universal.

J!
