hi all
new here cause i've got a question for all you experienced expedition owners.
i think my 4wd is kicking in on sometimes. if i'm running at highwayspeeds and encounter a slight hill or just add a little more throttle, i experience a slight shift/pull in the steering and a very slight rumble that i think is the front end drive kicking in. goes away when throttle returned to normal. i am not confusing this with kicking out of overdrive.
anybody experience this, and is there a fuse or something i can disconnect to turn off the awd feature to trouble shoot this feature?
everything else is great with truck, except gas mileage, lol. anybody put one of the inexpensive chips in the increase milage?
That's odd. I have a 2000 with AWD and I don't feel this. I do feel the 4WD kick in when the wheels slip (in rain or ice/snow). What you're describing sounds like an issue I had recently. My transfer case fluid was really old (I think it was original with 130k miles on the vehicle). I would get it when accelerating from a stop (esp. around a corner) and going uphill, just as you describe. When I changed out the transfer case fluid, it went away instantly.
Remember to look in your book for the correct fluid & capacity, and buy a small hand pump to pump the fluid, it makes the whole job a lot easier. I think it took me about 30 minutes to complete.
thanks saber, the oil changes are planned for the near future, regardless. i still don't understand the slight pull from the front end, like i had a momentary change in alignment. others have noticed this too, and the only explanation in my mind is that the front wheel drive has kicked in, but i am definatley open to suggestions. (thats why i'm here, lol)
there is a fuse under the hood that disengages the 4wd system. pull it and your only in 2wd. check your tires.... are they the same tread depth? type and size? i had 2 different tires on my 00 and i got all kinds of noises. they read that they were the same size but way off when you measured them. if you just did a tire rotation that may cause it.
sounds right. towards the firewall and in the center... i know there are only 3 fuses around it but with out looking im not sure. i put tape on it so i could pull it easier
You mentioned that you have an AWD Expy. Is that the same as the A4WD system. On my EXPY it says its A4WD and when I dicided to save money and only replace the two most worn tires it made an awful vibration in the from. This was quickly fixed when I broke down and bought two more tires. If you do know anything about the AWD vs A4WD system please let me know. I'm looking for a lift kit and many of them say they are not compatible with AWD systems. thanks fitzy67
the new tires were my fix also. only after i replaced a box full of other parts. as far as i know the the front suspendion is the same from 4wd to awd to the f150. now the rear is different between the f150 and the exp. how much lift are you looking at? i got a few inches from just the torsion bars. also you can get the "keys" to adjust them as well. check out expeditionforum.com i know a bunch of guys did lifts they might have more info.
as far as i know they are the same. unless the drive shaft angles are different and the lift will wear out ujoints faster. now that i think about it if the test truck was awd and it wore ujoints faster cause the front spins more they would say its not for awd so people cant blame them for worn joints.
