ive got a 1964 ford mustang engine in my truck with an automatic gear box but i want to fit a manuel box, would a manuel box fit straight on to my engine??
I believe you'll need to find the 5 bolt bellhousing, which was only available for a few years in the early-mid sixties. Behind that, I would assume the manual transmission will fit. As a complete unit, you'll likely find a 3 speed manual from a Fairlane or Falcon.
Yes that is correct, Ive had many 64 and 65's they all ran five bolt bell housing's...does'nt mean you have a five bolt bell though you need to check, could've been changed over the past forrty some years. Other than that just match your bell with your tranny and life's good.
Doesn't sound like it's a 64-65 then. Even better!
I swear, anytime I've seen an early SBF V8 in something else, the seller claims it's out of a Mustang, and every SBC is out of a Vette! Like there's a difference between (most) Mustang 289's and the ones that come out of a Country Squire?!
Well lets face it more interchange options for you...T-10 four Speed...no problem....popular 3 Speed truck tranny no problem....a dime a dozen as far as tranny options for you.
Halfway through '65, the 289 changed to 6 bolts. That pattern carried through with the 300/302/351 all the way through the end of that series. Thus, you have many trans to chose from.
You can find a bell and go with:
--non synchro 3 speed
--all synchro 3
--T10--if you can find one that doesn't pop out of gear, good luck with that
--Ford Toploader 4 speed. A little hard to find in the yards, but available rebuilt with new innards
--Ford toploader OD 4 speed, as found in late '70s-to mid'80s PU and van. Several flavors including top shift and SROD (weaker) and iron side shift (may have oddball shift location.
--T5 5 speed OD trans as found in Mustangs and many others. Strong enough if you are not towing or hauling heavy loads.
IMO the T5 is the way to go. Just about the same work as the others, but it's a good shifting trans with good ratios and OD. I would not go through this work for the 3 speeds. I would consider the Toploader 4 speed if I was going to race it and not hit the highway. I would consider the toploading OD if I found one laying around, it didn't squeal (like the one in my van) and I was on the highway a bunch.
This link shows a pic of the SROD, first one up, with addtional info on the others: Domestic Truck Tranny Guide
For the 3 and 4 speeds, you MIGHT be able to keep the same mount. 5 speed pretty sure the mount has to move. Since you are already a transplant, hard to say.
ive managed to find a transmission would this fit on my engine,4 speed toploader trans with bellhousing ,clutch fork, flywheel, release bearing ,block plate ,newish clutch assembly, starter and shifter all to suit ford 289/302/351w/351c
Did they change to rear tranny mounts when installing the 289/C-4? We have no point of reference since your truck is not stock. Is your whole clutch linkage (stock) gone? Did they go to a hanging brake pedal?
