Hello everyone! I'm wondering if anyone can please shed some light on this one. Here are the facts:
1999 5.4L Automatic 4X4.
Was running great, wife got home and a few hours later--it wont start. It wont even crank--just clicks. I pulled the starter--it's good (had it tested at 3 different shops). Battery is fully charged and good (had it tested as well). Cleaned the terminals and made sure they are tight. Did a visual of the fusible links (they look OK) no blown fuses in the fuse box. ALL my gauges go crazy (fuel, speed, RPM, Temp--EVERYTHING) when I turn the key to the on position, the wiper will sometimes go with it being in the off position. I noticed the positive on the battery was HOT after trying to crank it about 3 - 5 times, but only clicking at the fire wall relay / solenoid. This was sudden--no signs, no warning--just one hour it's fine and then suddenly not. IDEAS???
If you mean the relay that is mounted on the fire wall that has the + from the batter and the other leading to the relay--I picked up a new one and the problem continued. Would that account for the crazy gauges & the hot + post on the battery?
No but it could account for the clicking yet no starter turn problem. I'm not positive if the 99s have it or not but you might want to see if you have another starter relay in the power distribution box.
If you turn your car key and get nothing, or get anything less than an engine roaring to life, you might be in for a bad day.

Sorry for the late reply to your post. It turned out being the terminals. They seemed OK, but after I took them off, sanded them a bit, used a little battery terminal grease, reinstalled and tightened them--presto--problem was gone. Thank you again for reminding me about the basics.
