E-fans help

Hello everybody,
It's been awhile since my last post, i've been very busy the past few months with home improvements, TDY's, and spending time with my wife and the girls (5) this summer.
I just finally got around to the Expy and some of the projects that where put on hold. (underdrive pullys, e-fans and new cold air intake just to name a few.) I started tonight with the e-fans, I'm routing the wire and wanted some suggestions on what to connect the ignition wire too. Is there something under the hood that would work as an ignition power source? Also, one of the wires needs to be spliced into the a/c power wire, does any one know what wire would that be? Any help would be appreciated. I will post pics when done.

Yesterday the wife did it AGAIN!!!...she hit the Expy while she was backing out of the garage. I will post pics tomorrow, Now I have to take the Expy and the Oddy to the body shop for the estimates this coming week.

Connecting the ignition feed was easest for me anyway to go to the fuse block inside. As far as the a/c feed wire I connected it at the pressure switch which some what buried at the fire wall on the passenger side below the plastic box that houses the starter seleniod etc.

Thanks for the info C_.
I figured it out yesterday, I used my tester to find the right wire.
I finished the install this morning with excellent results.
Here are some pics of the install;

14" fans

I installed the controll module on the pass. side of the radiator

Space after removing stock fan

Had to notch out the radiator support for fans to fit

Fans installed

All covers back on

Yes, there is a complete kit if you want to spend $300-400, or you can buy the fans and control module seperate and save a ton of money; I went with saving money. you can buy them at any auto parts store, or even on ebay. My fans came with the zip tie like fasteners for installation. I think I spent about 150.00$$ in total.

Are you sure those fans will pull enough CFM's to cool durring a hot day? Those store bought fans like the ones sold at autozone or pepboys are pretty weak. I have went that route before & wouldn't do it again. I would either purchase a set up that's made for the truck or fab up a real electric fan like the one that the Lincoln mark VIII uses.

It looks like you did a very nice job, I just hope they keep it cool. I wouldn't trust it here durring the summer with 115+ days.

The flex-a-Lite kit I put on is expensive, but it moves a ton of air, you can feel it pulling air if you get close to the front of the truck when they are running. The custom fan shroud helps pull a lot of air thru. The kit was about $500 but it was a complete kit and I ordered it from Summit. Some have questioned the quality of the motors in this kit but I have had it installed for over a year and they still work great and keep the truck cool. The best thing about the e-fans is the improved throttle response.

Turborich,
I'm getting about 4000+ CFM's of airflow out of these two 14" fans. I guess I will find out next summer if this going to be enough to cool the Expy. If not I will research for better performing fans. Thanks for the MarkVIII tip.
When I installed the fans I noticed that the factory radiator is very weak looking, I might look into upgrading to something with better performance that won't drain my wallet. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

How'd you measure that?

You're gonna need a new one anyway after a few thousand miles with those fans zip-tied through the radiator. That's an improper mounting method that will lead to failure of the radiator. There's a reason the OEM's use brackets and mounts to secure fans away from the radiator.

Sorry, saw the wrong number, they pull a combined CFM of 3600. I didn't measure that, I went from what the box says. I guess just like all the other electric fans out in the market, this CFM number it's just a calculation that the manufacture does. Only time will tell how good these fans will to perform.
I'll be sure to let you know when the OEM radiator fails due to the zip ties.

As long as you put those zip ties on tight & used the rubber pads you should be OK. I didn't say will be, but should be. After all they are made for it, just kinda so so though.

You have to think about the area where the fans are not pulling air through the radiator or A/C condensor because there is no fan shround like on the factory set up or the above mentioned kit from summit.

Don't get me wrong, it's a good idea & all. It's just that I've been there & done that on other vehicles & nothing can compare to a factory electric fan or an engineered kit.

Who knows, maybe to fans will work out good. let us know. Good luck.

I also doubt that the fan attachment method would be a long term solution. However, I'd be more interested in his long term gas mileage statistics - what sort of improvement was noted and how much?

Thanks

IMHO Flex-A Lite is the BEST. Mine have been on for more than 160,000 and have not had any problems. Enouf said?
