Has anyone changed their own ball joints on their Expedition? I have a 97 Expedition 4x4 that need some bad. I've seen how-to's but want to see if they are too hard to do for a rookie with basic tools. I know I will need a press. I usually do my own work on everything after researching and I have not got myself over my head yet. Mechanic said 2 hours for $400 for the good Moogs or $230 for the cheap import ones. So I figure it will take me all day for about $40 with the Moogs.
I did my 97 by my self, not too bad of a job. Took all day but I replaced upper, lower ball joints and tie rod ends all at same time then took for a good alignment not just toe and go which some shops call alignment.
Can you tell me how you did yours? I have read different ways people have done it. Did you take off the torsion bar and CV shaft or leave them on. Im not too familiar with suspensions and drivetrain but I bet I will be after this.
Did not remove torsion bar, but did remove half shaft from hub assembly and tied up out of way taking care not to pull apart CV joint,
Ditto to that. Once that's out of the way it's ball joint press time. Soak them good with WD-40 to aid in removing to old ones and reinstalling the new ones. Oh, and while the new ball joint is still in your hands, thread the grease fitting in then take it back out. This makes it much easier to install it after you press the new joint back in.
