Question Oil Filter Question..

I am thinking of changing the oil in my truck myself for the first time. I looked under the truck noticed the oil filter sits at an odd angle close to a transmisison cooler hose and wanted to ask how everyone else gets the filter off and on. Do I need any special tools?

Motorcraft FL-820S
Motorcraft semi-synthetic 5w20 oil x7 quarts (i always keep 1 extra...just in case though)

1. you might need a oil filter wrench...they're about $5 or less at wallyworld
2. a funnel
3. crescent wrench if you don't have a combo wrench set (metric)

lay on your side and just reach up into there. don't worry, the oil will drain through a hole in the skid plates. there is a channeled peice of plastic to direct the oil away from the axle as well

I recommend you fill the new filter 1/2 way with oil before installing. That'll minimize the amount of time you are running dry before building oil pressure

Thank you for the info. How hard is it to get the oil filter off in the tight space? I have a oil filter wrench that fits over the top of the oil filter that tightens on the filter like a c clamp when you turn the socket wrench. Will I need a universal joint or is there enough room?

I go from the top side. Alot easier. You might have to loosen the intake some but it works great

I did mine from the bottom ... I have short arms LOL. I couldn't find an oil filter cap to fit the FL820S properly so I used a strap wrench and extension bar to do it. It is not hard but need a little patience to position the strap on the filter.

honestly, I've always done it with my hands

other than the very 1st oil change...I'd still like to take a plasma cutter to that damn robot

anyways, they've always been hand-tight. there is enough room in there for you to get a filter wrench...you just won't be comfortable

I get it broke loose from the bottom using the pliers-type filter wrench. One twist and it comes off by hand.

I get it from the bottom.
I have a wrench from J.C. Whitney that is made of spring steel. It looks like a small coil spring.
You slide it up on the filter and turn it counter clock wise and it clamps the filter and I use a 3/4 socket with an extention to get it off.
And just spin the new one on by hand.
Hope this helps
