I work on about 200-300 f-150s at work and none of them have the oil filter where mine is. My truck is super easy to change the oil, the oil filter is next to the oil pan. Just wonderiing if previous owner installed remote oil filter.

1999 5.4 4WD. How do you access the oil filter? Do you have to remove the Front Left Tire for easier access? Busted a couple knuckles yesterday and was unsuccessful.
It will probably be easier getting it from the bottom, but a certain amount of contortioning will be involved. Getting from the top would require me to get my six year old granddaughter to lean through the wheel well. Her mom wouldn't like that. With the 4WD, I have an extra axle in the way for a smooth operation.
Mine is right behind the bumper in front of the drivers side front tire. Very, very easy to get to. I don't even have to lay on the ground or even get under the truck to get to it.
'97 and '98 4wd's have them behind the front bumper, 2wd's have them on the block as far as I know. The '99+ 4wd's have them down there somewhere as well. The only relocation kit I know of moves it behind the bumper. I love it being behind the bumper with the one exception, it could cause engine failure if you get in a wreck and the oil filter gets knocked off.
The ridiculously easy to change "behind the bumper" remote oil filter was 1 of the things I liked about my new '98 Cream Puff, now with 9900 miles!

I wouldn't worry about this system in "a wreck" you may have more serious issues. However I do worry about all the extra fittings & hoses that might ultimately fail, bleeding the oil out on a trip w/o so much as a blip on the radar! Every other vehicle I've ever owned had oil filters that simply screwed directly to the block. If I have a fender bender that crumples my bumper I know where that oil filter is & what oil dripping looks like.
I tried laying on my back as well as on a small step stool going from the top. No luck and three beers. I was able to touch the filter from the bottom, but couldn't get a strap wrench on the end of it to turn. Guess I'll get a filter cap that fits the end of it and a 3/8" ratchet. Appears I'll also have to throw a couple swivels in the mix too.

I hit a deer with my truck this summer and if you're ever driving past mile marker 57 eastbound on I90 through montana you can still see the oil slick! We pulled over right away and stepped out to survey the damage and oil was spewing everywhere on the road so I shut it down right away - got a tow. It mangled my bumper pretty good, cracked the grill and bug deflector and a tiny knick on the front fender corner. Turns out the oil came from a BB sized hole in the oil filter - so as far as mechanical stuff goes it cost the price of an oil change. Luckily no engine damage though as it was probably shut down 30 seconds after impact at the most. I'll post a pic of the damage in my gallery.
Thanks for the short cut(s). Mechanics gloves are a good start if I can get my paws in position. A filter cap with 3/8" ratchet and four beers ougta do the trick.
I'm gonna run a couple thousand miles on the old filter before I attempt.
