fried starter/solenoid?

A pal borrowed my 1988 f150 over the weekend, and I forgot to mention that the ignition occasionally
sticks...long story short, the starter was cranking for quite a few seconds before he figured out what was
happening. Since then have successfully started it a few times, but now I just get the "click"; battery
(radio/lights), but no ignition. Is the solenoid/starter fried?

If so (forgive me, I'm a newbie) can I jump it to start it? I'm guessing not, because it's not a battery problem.
Any way I can move it back to my garage short of a tow?

Also, I would like to try to replace the starter/solenoid myself. Is this something that I can get a Haynes
manual and walk myself through, or should I leave it to the pros? I guess I'm looking for a difficulty scale of
1-10.

thanks

Is your solenoid mounted on the r/h side wheel well by the battery? I don't know the layout of your year but my 83 is laid out that way. If it is, and you suspect your solenoid is bad you can remove it and go down to one of the local parts shops and have the solenoid tested. They cost less than $10 and its easy work, all you need is a simple tool set. Just do it yourself. Disconnect the negative battery cable and stow it aside so it won't accidently make contact with the negative battery post(just for safety). Then disconnect the wires and cables attached to the solenoid(Make a diagram of which cables go where and mark them as well so you can put them back in the
proper place). Its no big deal and its an easy job. Good Luck.
