I had to replace the starter in my 79 150, manual trans.
I went ahead and replaced the solenoid and voltage regulator while I was at it. Now I got a weird problem.
Turn key, nothing, no click on solenoid. I measured voltage. Battery 12V. Voltage to solenoid 10.5V. Thought that read 12V since it's only battery cable between them. Anyway, put key in start position, and the voltage at Solenoid drops to 2.5V. Figure that can't be right. Any ideas?
If you are getting a voltage drop from the battery to the battery side of the solenoid, you have a bad connection or cable. Make sure you clean the terminals. New batteries post oxidizes and require cleaning. If you getting a voltage drop across the battery to starter, bad solenoid.
I agree with Blue. You need to tighten your connections and make sure you cables are all in good shape. Instead of making your voltage measurements to ground, use your DC voltmeter to measure the drops across the different points. By measuring the voltage drops, it is easier to understand exactly where the circuit resistance exists.
As an example, if you measure across the solenoid with your meter leads while someone cranks the truck and you several volts dropped across the solenoid, then you know that there is resistance there.
