how do i test starter/solenoid

just went through fiasco of solving battery issue, my starter sounds tired.

is this what a starter sounds like when its dying? its cranking slow like the batteries arent charged (just got 2 new ones now) but it starts every time.

how can i test?

alternator is fine, tested 14V

could solenoid be causing this?

thanks
mike

I just replaced my starter, I,m sure the motor was good and the solenoid was bad (fell apart). You can remove the solenoid but good luck finding a replacement. I looked all over the internet and dcouldn't find a replacement solenoid. IMO, the rebuilders have the supply locked up somehow so they are the only ones who can get their hands on them= more profit. Hope you have better luck.

I suppose you can, but keep in mind that the solenoid engages the starter gear to the ring gear. You can test to see if the motor turns but not under load, so what's the use?

I know the feeling, and that's what I did, starts fine. I also should tell you that my ordeal started with a battery fiasco too, all is well now, buy a starter and be jprepared for a shock I bought a reman from the dealer, $309.00 out the door after I gave him the core.

01 excursion morris,

Instead of posting a "nothing" post, why not just go to the very top of the postings, in a blue bar find "Thread Tools", click on it and then click on "Subscribe to This Thread" in the drop-down menu?

Easier for you, easier than all the rest of us looking past do-nothing posts.

Just an FYI.

a little up date for you guys

it turns out my hard start is/was 3 things

battery cables- they are corroded and crappy. i hate them (ed is shipping me some new ones)

batteries- got them tested, both were bad. replaced under warranty

starter- would barely turn over this morning. truck was plugged in for 1 hour before start... used a hammer on it(tapped it a few times), and BAM truck fired right up... i will be replacing this soon.

problem solved
