troubles after fuel filter change

I am looking for some help. 2006 6.0 diesel. I bought it used and did a regular oil and fuel filter service. I started with baldwin filters and followed owner's manual procedures. After servicing, it ran rough a little but smoothed out. After sitting overnight, it was hard to start. Sounded like it had no fuel. It started but took a very long time to smooth out.
I looked on this forum and got some more information. I bought new caps for both cannisters (thought they were cracked), replaced the new filters with new motorcraft filters, replaced the o-rings, followed the techguide, step by step (even torque specs), at the beginning of this forum. Did all of this yesterday. It blowed white smoke for a little while but smoothed out again. I let it set overnight, got in it this morning, and it is still seems like it has lost a prime at startup. I even waited about starting until the fuel pump quit running.
I am at a loss. Anyone got a suggestion?

Is your upper filter bowl filling up when you crank?

What oil filter did you use? The injectors will not fire without a minimum HPOP (High Pressure Oil Pump) discharge pressure of 500 psi (I believe). An aftermarket oil filter can also cause starting issues IIRC.

Did you turn the key on and off 3-4 times after changing the filters to get the fuel primed?

If it was running for a while this isn't the issue. It sounds like maybe you got the spring assembly below the filter out of alignment and its not holding fuel in the bowl like it should.

How do I check the alignment of the spring assembly. All of the filters are Motorcraft, new caps and o-rings, new water separator plug with o-ringand, even a new motorcraft oil filter. I am willing to do the alignment, just what are the specifics
