I am pretty much a novice when it comes to brakes. I am looking at replacing the current brakes with quality parts. The issue is that I am not exactly sure what quality is with brakes.
So far I have heard about doing a rear disk brake conversion but I am not doing that.
For the front I have heard that Hawk pads are good when mated with slotted rotors.
So the questions are:
What pads should I go with front and rear?
What type of rotors for the front?
Parts should be checked or just replaced due to being inexpensive if anything is?
Any suggestions would be great. Again, I am not doing the disks.....
Several people told me that I should consider replacing the rubber brake lines, which I probably will.
You can get em cheap off Amazon.com (with free shipping!) if you get the part numbers.
Also...I'm still "on the fence" about slotted or drilled rotors. I'm not convinced they're really that much better than regular rotors, with modern pads.
For rotors, I recommend contacting diversified cryogenics. They sell Brembo OEM replacement units that are treated with nitrogen. The Brembo quality combined with the cryo tx (cost is about $15) creates a rotor that is almost as hard as stainless steel- and product that has been used in racing for years. Will work well with the Hawk pads.
i use napa rotors, and napa premium pads. for the rear, i use the napa drums and premium shoes.
on average, we get 35k miles on the front and 50k miles on the rears on the anybody can drive it trucks.
on the one truck one driver pickups, we get around 60k miles on fronts, and 90k miles on rears.
I've ben told tha the rotors made in china are pure cr@p
You wouldn't believe how many "performance' parts are made in China now. I know a guy who is building a Gen2 426 Hemi and the K1 crank and rods are made in China. There reasoning is that you couldn't afford them if they were US made.
