Advice for Buddy
I have never cracked the valve covers, all though I'm in need of GPs, so add that to the list. I have never touched the motor other than mods, I have replace the usual stuff; CPS, water pump alt etc. but I am still on my stock starter. I think I put 3 of those in my '89 2500 chev, I drove that thing into the ground with about 325K on it. The transmission was replaced twice, motor once at about 280K, you can get a short block 350 pretty cheap.
Although I have put a built trans into my early bird after I fried it (my fault)
I also had a '95 Suburban 1500 that I never did any thing to the motor or trans and it went to about 285K, I never worked that truck it just hauled the family. Traded it in on a minivan and I think both the trans and the motor where on their way out.
I would never get a gasser again, its just not the same. But I work my trucks and if your friend doesn't he may be able to get away with a gasser.
