My buddy wants to buy a truck but I can't convince him that diesels are better than anything out there. Anyone who has over 200,000 miles on their truck let me know so I can prove to him that powerstrokes are dependable long life engines.
What does he need the truck for? If he is pulling heavy loads, I would advise him to get a Diesel, if he is pulling light loads he might be more comfy in a gas.
I have 120,000 on my truck and had to change the CPS on the engine last year. That is the only thing I had to change, besides the normal maint. stuff and mods.
tell him that if he wants a truck that will take a crap after 150000 miles then get a gas but if he wants a truck that will last 300000 miles then to get a diesel

Oh come on now, yes we all love diesels but gassers can go well past 150K. My FIL has 230K on an 89 GMC and the motor is box stock and still runs strong. Well, as strong as a GM 350 can run anyways.
If your bud won't be doing a lot of heavy towing a diesel may be overkill for him. These things aren't cheap to keep going when stuff does break. I love my diesel and I don't think I'll ever go to a gasser again, but oil burners are not for everyone. Just don't tell him about PMS and the extra money that will be spent due to it
maybe my dad just had bad engines in his chevy but yeah im sure you're right, my dad swapped in a new 350 small block in his 92 k2500 after 100000 miles but having the chevy is probbably the problem
I have more then 200 k on mine. But like said above diesels are not for everybody. My friend and I were driving from Reno to Salt Lake City a year or so ago and after he drove my truck with the trailer behind it he said " I will get a diesel in my next truck." He does alot of towing and at that time diesel wasnt much more than gas so it wasnt to bad, but now it my be a different story.
I've got 213k on mine with only the usual fixes, alternator, waterpump, glow plugs & relay. 100k of that was with me "altering" the performance. I guess the tranny did just go out 1,000 miles ago, but again, that's with "altered" performance.
275K miles. More than 200K of those miles has been with some sort of performance altering tuning. BullyDog before, and for the last 30K miles DP Tuner with live tuning. Still running the stock factory tranny. Oh by the way did I mention that this truck has towed ALOT of campers during the last 200K miles. It had 50K put on it in LA after Katrina/Rita towing FEMA campers, and my personal 5er is just shy of 11,500 #s.
I'm right at 210k and it still runs like new. I have zero leaks, have been through 2 alternators, 2 water pumps, 2 starters, 1 CPS and 2 transmissions. Both of those pretty much my own fault.
I've only got 261k on mine. I guess I'll be passing up Brandon soon enough now that he has the little commuter. I've had 1 CPS act up, the alternator twice, the clutch started to slip at 212k so I changed that. I don't get much past 60k on a set of tires, change oil every 5k & fuel filter every 15k. Tranny & diff fluid at around 60k - 70k. I've also done shocks, coolant and belt changes, and added some air bags to fix my sagging rear springs.
But if I set the cruise at 65 without a trailer I can still break 20 mpg, slow down to just above 60 and I can get just over 22 mpg. This is with the ranch hand replacement front & rear bumpers and a toolbox weighing about 500 lbs.
Had a 94 f150. Bought new. Just sold it 6 months ago. 14/15 years? 150k miles manual tranny. original clutch. 4.9l strt inline 6. Only maintenance items Plus a gas tank and oil pan. Salty winters and all. Still runs like a champ and running today. Pulled boats/cars/firewood, etc. well over the pull rating sometimes. Was a sweet ride for the years i had it. Never left me walking or put allot of money into it. It was worth every penny at $10k brand new.
Got my diesel because i got a bigger camper and I can afford it know. Plus i have wanted a diesel since i got my license and it is something new to fart around with. And knowing about there durability while pulling them heavy campers. It came with a bonus, Waking up the neighbors at 5:30 am and this forum.. This truck will carry me to retirement. I have winter storage plans(indoor), it never seen salt, (clean as a bell) and only put on about 10k miles per year or less. Should be set for a long time
