I have a 71 302 stock internals. I have swapped the intake manifold, carbs and valve covers as shown with a 2x2 adapter. Engine fires right up and idles fine. After a few minutes white smoke comes from the valve covers if I pull the breather it will flow direct from the breather hole, if not it looks like the valve covers themselves are smoking. Pretty sure I have a venting problem as I don't have a radiator hooked up. Any ideas on best way to vent this setup? Thanks
i wouldn't be running it to long with no coolant. when i got pulled over last time by the ministry i was almost fined for not having a working pcv valve on the truck. their book said our trucks had one back then.
The closed breathers have a metal flap inside them. You may need to push it open a little further. Is there a breather on the other side?
Yes breathers on both sides, I agree they don't seem to be breathing too well. The breathers have (2) half dime size holes on either side of the metal strip that crosses the bottom to lock it onto the valve cover. These holes open up into a foam filter element. Maybe I'll try some different breathers before I go the PVC route.
I would go with a pvc system and not the open breathers. A closed breather on 1 valve cover with a hose the the air cleaner, and a pcv valve on theother valve cover going to the base of the carb.
I would think that those two breathers would be enough to vent the pressure. Nothing wrong with running a PCV system if you have the means. Otherwise, open element breathers work fine. I've been running them for several years without any problems.
I remember back around 1960, my dad had a '60 Ford Falcon with a 6 cylinder. It had a breather like yours, but it also had a large pipe that went from the back of the valve cover down the side of the engine, and had a snout that opened into the air stream under the car.
I think that was the way most cars vented the crankcase back then.
You need to just install a PCV valve. I think they make an adaptor to fit in one of the holes you have in your cover. The vacuum will pull air thru your current oil filler breather, thru the block, and then burn the fumes in the engine.
