ok so im getting code 14 in the cm, during the koeo. ive replaced the ignition module, and the distributor pickup coil/stator, still getting the same code.
the truck idels fine and is timed right, but when driving under load she sputters and sometimes stalls.
ive also checked the fuel pressure and its at 32 psi when running, around 40 psi when not running.
i dont know where else to look, would a tps cause this? and the code? i chked it the other day and at idle it was .94volts, i think spec is .34volts at idle.
I read an article that found a wiring harness short. The ranger would die unexpectedly because any bump would short out the PCM spark signal.
Here's the address: The Intermittent No-Spark Ranger
i will check inside the conduits for the spout tomorrow, wish i had a scope so i could see it, hoping this is what my problem is as i replaced everything in the ignition now.
also, after it started running all crappy, i noticed the distributor hold down bolt was loose and i could move it with my hand. could it be it messed up the timing and i dont have it set right???
spout out, and at running temp, i set it at 10BTDC on the pointer. but theres also a round sight below that pointer, should i set 10BTDC in that sight??? itd be real impossible to see as its lower down on the crank.
like i said she will idle fine and rev fine at idle, its when i give her gas while driving that she will act up. makes no sense to me. i thought fuel pump or filter but i get 32psi at the shraeder valve while running, and like 40psi when not running. if i un hook the vacum on the fuel pres reg, it will jump up to like 42psi when running.
still somewhat lost, lol , could it still be the fuel filter? is it possible to get good pressure but not enough volume??
g_k50, you are a wealth of info thanks for those 2 links.
i will check my coil again, i have checked it before and it was good, i also swapped in a backup coil i have. this is when the engine died and wouldnt restart. i still dont know why it wouldnt restart as it starts almost everytime now. im leaning towards this possible short in the spout line, or maybe even a bad coil. im going to do some more investigating tomorro after work. hopefully ill find something.
do you have any idea if fuel pressure could still be good through a semi clogged fuel filter?? but under load cant push enough fuel? my old man keeps telling me to chang eit first and go from there if its still running bad. cant say i blame him as its only $12cdn at my local parts place.
also i dont know if it means anything, but about 4 weeks ago i drove from halifax nova scotia to cold lake alberta, very long drive. it worked A1, just started acting up since i got here. the whole way i experimented mileage with different octanes, sunoco 94 being the highest iput in, could this have caused a problem??
I would consider what gas was being put into the tank. When the big fuel tanks are refilling the underground tanks at the service station it stirs up all the gunk. So that when it gets pumped some of the gunk gets into your tank and clogs the filter. Did you fill up while the fuel tanker was at the station?
nah not that i took notice to, but i mean i was in the middle of nowhere at times, lol. i also threw in a bottle of gas line antiifreeze (eliminate water) and a bottle of injector cleaner, but that was after it acted up.
i got about 1/4 tank left, should i go throw some 87 octane in it?? see if it maybe clears up??
FIXED--- changed fuel filter. works A1 now. also drained the tank and refilled with good gas. had the old distributor pickup tested and came up bad. so it was 2 problems at the same time, clogged fuel filter and distributor pickup..
