Ive had a shift delay from Park to Drive or Reverse and Reverse to Drive for a while now but It seems to be getting longer recently. It is usually longest in the morring when it is cold. This morring it wouldnt kick into gear unless I reved it up. Tranny fluid level is fine. After I got it to move it was normal (the usual 4-5 second delay).
Another thing is my OD light will stay on. I belive it is a short in the wiring becuase I can move the shifter some and it will go out untill I hit a bump and then it is back on.
One last thing is I can be crusing at around 50 MPH in OD with the TC locked and start to accelerate and the TC will lock and unlock while I accelerate. You can feel it and see and hear the revs go up. Any thoughts there? I did a Tranny flush about 7-8 months ago and changed the filter.
Any help would be nice. I have a felling this is going to get pretty pricey.
Thanks
John
Delayed engagements both forward and reverse when cold is most cases is low fluid. I know you said you checked it, just want to be sure that you are checking it with the engine running in park on level ground.
The OD light problem is most likely a bad wire inside the shifter itself (common problem).
The converter cycling on and off could be a number of issues, it may need to have a scanner attached to see if it is the computer or tranny causing this.

Did you have the delay before the flush and fluid change?

No, but not right after either. I did a flush becuase when it would get hot it would only go in 2nd or 3rd. I did the flush and that helped a little then changed the trans range sensor and it fixed the problem. Im not sure on the exact history of the tranny but I can tell that it has been out of the truck at one time. Not sure what for or what was done. Ive had it for around a year now.
Just was a thought. Have seen bad filter and/or seal allow
air into the system. I would check the adjustment of the DTR.
If good, next would be a line pressure test.
It changes hot an cold? (length of time).
Cold the EPC lowers the line pressure.
You need to repair the OD lamp before you do anything.

It wouldnt surprise me if the filter or seal was bad. I took the cheap way out (or so I thought) And got one from Auto Zone. I know better than to do it but honestly thought I need a tranny at the time so I didnt think it would help any how.
Whats the DTR? Trans Range??
How can I test the line pressure and what should it be at?
Yes when it is cold It seems to take longer to get into gear than when it is hot but when it is hot it still takes longer than it should. I can drive on the interstate for an hour with no problems, get to the house and put it in Reverse and it still has a delay. It does it every time I shift from any gear no matter how long the truck has been running.
Thanks. I checked it running on level ground, it was cold though but it was still in range.
That's meaningless. Checking trans fluid cold doesn't mean anything. Your level could be right, it could be too low, or it could be too high. You don't know by checking cold.
It was one of the stupidest things that Ford did by putting a cold level on the dipstick. It doesn't mean anything.

Thank you. I did check it hot the other day when I noticed it getting a little worse. It was in good shape. I checked in the morring just to make sure that there was fluid in there because it acted like it was dry. I thought it was better than not checking it at all and driving knowing absolutly nothing. I know that it is best to check it hot but wanted to make sure that one morring when it acted up.
I still havent got ahold of a line pressure guage but im still trying.
Thanks
John
