Unhappy transmission problem or is it something else?

I think I may need a new transmission but my dad says no i don't. (doesn't know anything about cars) I do a lot of high way/freeway driving and at about 55 my truck will stop it has the hardest time getting a mph over! i can put gas pedal to floor and it would hold it right at 55 the cruis control is not on, its automatic truck. I have to let go of gas pedal let it acutally drop down a bit (5 to 10 mphs) then step on gas pedal and it will get up past 55. Why is this? I have driven other cars/trucks and i know this is not suppost to happen!

If so what am i looking at for a new one rough cost Ford Ranger 2001

We are talking about your 2001 Ranger?

In the Seattle area?

Even a 4 cylinder Ranger should pull to almost 90 on the flat and hold 55 easily on most all the freeways you have, hills and all.

Are you in the right gear? How many times does your trans shift?

Do you have a tachometer? What rpm do you show at 55mph?

Is yours a high mile truck, with a worn out engine, or faulty catalytic converter or other problem?

Prolly something else...one thing is this:

The first thing I would look at is the accelerator cable. It's prolly kinked (not uncommon) and is binding up. It has an inner plastic cable surrounded by an outer plastic housing.

Post the engine size, I'll give you the particulars.
