I recently purchased a 65 stepside 240 6 that has been sitting a few years
I can turn it by hand, but it will not crank, I put in new solenoid, voltage regulator, starter and battery still will not turn over just clicks and the voltage regulator wires get hot. I did crank very slowly once when I hooked cables directly to the old starter, but it will not do it again.
Try removing the negative battery cable from where it attaches to the block and cleaning it so you get a better connection. If the cable looks bad, I would replace it. For that matter, check the condition of all of the cables. They tend to corrode over time. Replace any cable that looks marginal.
Congrats on your buy, and welcome to FTE. Are you sure the starter isn't jammed against the flywheel somehow. If it doesn't turn over within 2 seconds, it ain't gonna - in other words, don't just hold the key on, it will just fry the starter or wiring and drain the battery. It shouldn't take much juice to get the motor to at least turn if you can turn it by hand.
Not quite sure why the voltage regulator wires would be getting hot in a start situation. Might want to recheck that the wires are all connected to the right places. Don't assume anything, since you can never be sure what the previous owners have done to it. Mine had the battery cable colors reversed (red ground, black positive) when I first got it - you just never know....
I know there was some straw and dirt inside where the starter mounts to the trans, can i pull the starter and turn the flywheel by hand to see if it is frozen? the motor turns pretty freely by hand, but the new starter would not enguage even when bypassing the solenoid.
i had the same exact problem as you on my truck. So i used a steel wire brush on all the connections until the metal was clean again, then put some conductive grease on. Now my engine cranks over very easily.
THANKS ALL. It was the negative ground and the motor was tight from not running for years. I used pb blaster and oil to free it up it ran smoother than any motor I have ever heard. now to the brakes.
