Starter problems

Replaced my starter in my 77 F150 with a 351W. It cranked a couple times, then no luck. I put new cables, battery adn solenoid, and it still just clicks when i turn the key. What else is left, could the voltage regulator be a problem?
Thanks

The clicking is the starter solenoid. Usually when they click they are good, but you can check for 12 volts at the rear terminal when someone holds the key to start. 12 volts is good, 0 volts is a dead solenoid.
Could be a bad starter. When you installed the new starter did you clean up the mounting bolts and the surfaces of the starter and the engine block? The starter gets its ground thru the mating surface of the starter and the engine block. Also check where the battery negative cable attaches to the block, make sure it is clean and tight.
You can always remove the starter and get it checked where you bought it. New rebuilt ones have been known to be bad.
Good luck.

Oh yeah the voltage regulator has nothing to do with the starting system. It only decides how much voltage the alternator puts out when the engine is running.

I cleaned up the ground to the block and the block was clean where the starter mounts up. I will pull it and have it checked. The other thing is the input terminal of the solenoid turns bright red and heats up when you try to start it. Whats up with that?
Thanks

Anyone have ideas on why the solenoid is heating up?
Thanks

Excessive current draw!!!! Dont keep trying to start it like this. Get the starter checked. Also make sure the engine is not binding up.

Well I had the starter checked out. Its good. I put it back in, same problem, so I pushed the truck let it roll and dumped the clutch. Try to start it and the starter spins like it isnt engagins, so I let it roll and dump the clutch, this time with the ignition on and the motor winds up and so does the starter. So it sound like the starter is too long, as in it is engaged when it should be disengaged and vice versa. I will pull it in the daylight and see what it looks like. If that is the case, I will just shim it and everything should be good. Any input or personal experiences would be appreciated.
Thanks

How much juice in the battery ?
Have the Battery cables & posts been cleaned WELL?
Have you tested the starter yourself with Booster cables, while the starter is off ?

What is the Manufacturer & Reference Number of the starter ?
