is there such a thing? I was looking on Craigslist just now and I came across a "offenhauser duel tunnel ram intake" that "fits a origonal BOSS motor or a BOSS 302 clone (a 302 block w/ 351C heads). is that possible and if so what are the performance pros and cons if any.
And would it be possible to put 351W heads on a 302? If so any gains?
a boss 302 is a 302 with 4 barrel 351c heads. they would be a horrible truck engine because they make high revving power because of the huge heads. maybe if you put 2 barrel heads or aussies on there with a track boss or maybe an edelbrock intake it would be ok in a pickup.
351w heads are pretty much identical to a 302 head. some instances are different with combustion chamber sizes but not much else.
A Boss 302 is a Boss 302 4-bolt main block with Boss 302 cylinder heads. The Boss 302 heads are close cousins of the 351C they predate, but not identical.
Quite the hot rod back in the day, you can buy SBF heads now that will outperform the old Boss heads.
You can also use 2V Cleveland (or 351M or 400) heads on the 302, with modifications. Search for "Clevor" on the Internet. I believe Edelbrock is now making a manifold to suit this.
Nice, Thanks guys. I was just curious about that.
Now does anybody know about Shelby 351 engines that went in the Shelby 350GT Mustangs by chance? heh heh. Or would that even be possible to do; take a 351W and turn it into a Shelby 350 clone so to speak? Or would that not be good for a truck because it would be a high winding motor? I'm just trying to come up with some ideas for my 351W build.
Which aint going to happen for a while, I'm just trying do some research on it to figure out what type of build would be best for her. She doesn’t see a lot of off road much anymore (due to the price of petrol) less snow counts or mud when I go and visit by buddies were I used to live. Mainly she will see pavement and the occaonal snow and light mud (not mud pits were its 2 feet deep just old logging roads that get greasy in the winter)
I’m thinking low end to mid range torque.
'69 & '70....well, you got me on that one. W/o doing a little more research, it appears they were stock 351w engines, as the one site I found said 351, 290 horse, & that was the gross hp for the 351w. According to the sites I found, 70s were really '69s, as Shelby had terminated his deal with Ford the the Mustangs were mostly cosmeticly different versions of stockers.
Thus, a "Shelby engine" from these years would be nothing different, unlike the early 289s....
As far as the OP wanting a warmed up 351, there are plenty of threads about warming these up with newer parts & ending up with a stronger engine than the stock '69.
Conanski seems to be the 351w man here, perhaps he will clear the air.
Yeah..no need to try and clone a boss 302 or HiPo 351 with rare 60's parts these days, just order up any 1 of a number of heads from Edelbrock, Dart, AFR, Trick Flow, Holley, Ford and others and 400+hp is yours, and there are also a wide selection of intakes to use on these motors for both carb and EFI applications.
