Well I personally didnt get stuck, I just floated across ( Love my FlareSide! ) but I tried twice then I started digging my self in so I stopped. Phill tried and that didnt work out to well so we called our good old friend cantu to pull joseph out
situations like that, you would be amazed, at what i hi lift jack and a shovel can do for you. Jack it up, shovel some sand mud dirt whatever under the tires, then dig a slope back from the tires, works for me everytime. Heck i had to do that 2 times in mud just last week, twice the left side of the truck was burried up to the door, jacked up the rear. Shoved a bunch of mud under tire dug a "ramp" out for the rear and repeat with the front got me out.
I only had 2wd both times thanks to a grenaded front u joint too.
A hi-lift jack is one of the few things I DON'T carry along with me. Probably should though since i've had to call a pretty big truck to get me out. Usually I use the buddy system. My friends K5 can usually get me out of whatever, and my F-350 can get out ANYTHING he's driving. But we did a drag right next to eachother and both got high centered. We called up a friend with a Chevy on 35's (70's or so.) He couldn't get us out so we called HIS friend with a 90's Chevy K3500 with 38" super swampers.
..then my starter went out and he had to pull me out dead weight.
He broke a little on his truck but got us out.
WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY OFF TOPIC THOUGH.

If your going to wheel a 2wd. Just make sure you've got good back tires and a reliable engine.
In my opinion hi lifts are worth there weight in gold, yea there dangerous. Apply the 2% rule and your good to go, 2% smarter than the jack, and you safe. With just a shovel and a hi-lift you could easily save your self a tow fee, usually not cheap but when they tack on the off road fee, that alone is like 500 bucks around here.
I've heard horror stories about the 'off road fee' that the tow companies tack on. One guy got it because he was in a campground and it snowed over a foot overnight and his 2WD truck was rendered useless. I think he said he only got towed about 50 feet, and the bill cost him over $350. Unreal.
Yea then again, he may only wheel with it on a rare occasion, which doesnt make cost since to buy a beater 4x4, and quite honestly if you learn to wheel in a 2wd you will be much a head of people that learned to rely on 4wd, heck when im wheel i get out lock the hubs, but leave it in 2wd, it adds a challenge, but im also comfortable cause i know that i can lock the transfer case and get my self out if i get stuck.
He doesn't want a 4x4 beater. He wants to know if a 2wd can be a suitable off-roader.
And if you really wanted to you could pop open the axle and weld it up to lock it. (FREE LOCKERS)
Basicly-
Hi-Lift: Seen at Les Schwab for $50.
Winch: Used or New range from $400-1500 :P
Shovel: $10 at any local hardware store.
Tires: $400 for two decent rear tires.
Now with a winch, which isn't really needed if you arn't some hardcore wheeler.. thats what, $1000? The price you can get a stock beater for. Which i'm pretty sure it could handle better then a stock beater.
Thanks for the advice. I never thought to get a hi-lift jack. I dont want a 4X4 because I like my truck. I am on a limited budget (little 3yr old girls are expensive!!!) but most of all, I want to build this truck before I move on to something else. Im going to have to work on it anyways, why not build it in to something better.
Prozon: I kinda dissagree with you, I think a winch is good for anyone going offroad. You may not need help if you stay on the easy stuff, but you know your going to run across someone who got a little to bold, and is stuck up to their axle.
I don't mean "hardcore" in the sense of things your doing. But moreso how much money your going to invest into the sport. A winch is one of the most expensive things you can get. ( ONE of them. )
Hell, the only reason I OWN a winch is because it was on a Jeep (j10) at my house, I took the whole front bumper, sanded it, painted it and cleaned up the winch, which I also shined up and painted.
I think you should go along with this plan of yours. These trucks are sweet
A winch is only 300 on sale at 4wheelparts, and its a good winch, plus get a ****** block and straps
A hi lift is 50 bucks, so that should be enough to get you out of any messes you can get in.
I will get a winch eventually. But not like its goin to be much use around here.... Only thing to tie too is a telephone poll or another rig. Im not to keen on pullin over a telephone poll.... There have been VERY few times that a hi lift and a shovel havent been able to get me out, and one time was cause my truck decided it wanted some water, also i carry, misc blocks of wood too. To put the jack on and to put under the tires.
Fishy.... Thats cool and all, except there not all 4wd.... My mom owns one, the only jeep ive seen in my whole life that was 2wd. Go figure. Just make sure you buy one that is 4wd.
