Hello all, I have a 93 Ford F250 with a Banks Sidewinger equipped 7.3 and E4OD transmission which when loaded it runs really hot. Hot meaning 230 to 245 degrees. Not pulling anything and she runs 190 and below. I have flushed the system, replaced the radiator (new 4 core), waterpump, thermostat, antifreeze as well as Caterpillar coolant additive. Fan clutch can be heard but not very loud as some postings have mentioned but seems good. Any and all help with this problem would be greatly appriciated.
My 91 F350 crew cab dually has basically the same issues with the same parts being replaced already.
Ever since I locked my fan clutch to the water pump I can go pedal to the metal uphill pulling a big trailer and blowing a black trail of smoke some good 50-60ft behind me and the engine temperature barely goes up. I'd say with all those new cooling system parts you can blame the only thing that hasn't been replaced yet, the fan clutch.
How did you manage to lock the fan to the waterpump with a fan clutch? I have tried this on other engines in the past but things did not work out well needless to say.
Thank you for the reply. I was starting to wonder if I was jinxed on the Ford truck forum for some reason.
Well one way would be to "pin" the clutch so the housing where the fan bolts to don't spin around teh shaft but is locked to it, but that's just asking for trouble as it's very likely that the whole fan assembly will spin itself off the water pump shaft upon engine shutoff and fly right in your radiator. What I did was make some small braces that go from the water pump pulley bolts to the bolts that hold the fan to the clutch housing, this way even if the braces shear the fan will just freewheel like it does in its stock form. I'll take some pics tonight when I get home, but I still think a new clutch is a better option - I only did this cause I'm in college and I can't justify spending $150 on something that I can make work for free, even if it costs me 1mpg in fuel economy.
Mine does exactly the same thing but I know my rad is pluged. After changing all them parts, and some being kinda high, Im wondering if theres a tempature sensor problem. Yours should have along with the guage, a Light that says engine temp. It will turn on with the ignition then go off. Does this light even come on for yours when it gets hot. I would try to find out if your guage is reading correctly unless you already have since you posted exact numbers instead of which letter the needle is over on the (Normal) text of the guage. Just a thought for something to check as a process of elimination. Man, Id done been agrivated with all that parts changing. Well, Good luck.
Well to eliminate the temp gage from misleading me I put a temperature gage (with numbers) and installed the sensor in the back drivers side of the engine. As far as the Ford temperature gage reading, well when pulling (which is about all I do with these trucks) that gage is past the word "normal" and the check engine light sometimes flickers, which kind of scares me.
