okay, so we all have our opinion about changing out the spark plugs early or at the 100k point.
This is a thread/poll for those who have changed them out. Please refrain from argueing with me in here and I'll try to do likewise.
I am interested in the # of people who have changed them, and what the results were.
And to gage how people view this subject, a few questions for those on the fence.
Again, lets just try to keep it on subject, and leave the debate for another thread.
1. Changed Plugs Early with 0 Problems.
2. Changed Plugs Early and they broke.
3. Waited Until 100K with 0 problems.
4. Waited Until 100k and they broke.
5. Changed Plugs in relation to a repair with 0 problems.
6. Changed Plugs in relation to a repair with breakage.
7. Intend to change plugs early to prevent the 100k breakage.
8. Intend to wait until 100k to avoid early breakage.
9. Indifferent and could care less because you'll ditch the truck before it gets there.
me, I'm going to wait. at my current rate, I'll have the truck almost 10 yrs before I get near the 100k point.
most likely I'll have to change them in 2-3 yrs because of their age if nothing else. I fully believe they'll last the 100k point, but 10 yrs is a bit much to expect for them to last
My mileage is about like yours. My 05, purchased new, currently has ~22,000 miles. Probably at about 30,000 I'll take a chance and purchase some Champion 7989 plugs, then take it to the dealer for the change.
I am waiting it out at this point. I am almost at 50K on my 05 and see no reason to rush the process. I'll give the techs at the dealership some time to "practice" on a few other peoples trucks first.
My Bro has a 99 F250 with over 100k miles, he took it to the dealer to have changed with no problems. But he also has it floored where ever he goes so not much carbon build up there. On the other hand I have an 08 F150 2wd. With 6500 miles on it. I will drive it to 100k. I will have The intake cleaned and run some additives to clean out some of the carbon before I change mine, but that will be when mileage suffers.
I think it would be good to define what "Changed Plugs Early" constitutes. The one respondent (Matt983`) that says his broke when changing "early" actually had 80K miles on his truck. While it is sooner than 100K, I wouldn't necessarily call it "early"...
Perhaps we could all agree that "early" is before the factory warrenty runs out? or before 20K miles, etc?
Why coulnt Ford leave well enough alone? The 302 was a great motor no problems. Got the same or better mileage as 4.6/5.4. Easily could make 250-275 hp and last for 200K. I was thinking about this the other day. Mt dads 88 f-150 4x4 got 18 mpg and would probably out pull my 4.6 equipped truck that gets 17-18 mpg. Sorta random but I think a good point.
had dealer change mine at 55,000km, just before warranty runs out at 60,000km. Was ready for a big fight with the selling dealer but they all came out fine, no breakage. The old plugs are now behind the bar and make a good story over a cold one!

good point Bridge.
I would say that the 36,000 to 40,000 mile point or less miles would constitute as an early plug change.
everybody else cool with that?
80,000 miles is mighty close to the recommended interval
I considered changing them early, but I'm only putting about 5,000 miles a year on the truck, because I only drive it when I need to haul something. I figure I won't need to change them for at least 12 years at this rate. I put 186,000 miles on my '92 F150, and only changed plugs once. I figure the 2006 should be able to do the same. After all, it's a Ford, right?

What does this have to do with warranty? What would the warranty cover if plugs are good till 100k? I hear this happend with someone else but why.
I just bought my 2006 f150 a few weeks ago with 18,000 miles on it but after reading threads like this one I began to worry about the plug change. I called my father in law who is a mechanic for a City in MI. They have quite a few f150s in there fleet. He said that even with the increased idol time there trucks have, they still wait until the 100K mark to change plugs and have never broken one. He says just make sure you follow the TSB. I'll be following his advice and waiting until I get to 100K.
