Hello everyone, I have a 2001 f-250 superduty and recently the left front wheel has began making a really annoying squealing sound. I replaced the pads on both sides and that didn't help at all so I am thinking it may be a bearing. My question is how hard is it to replace the hub assembly, while I am no mechanic I can work on most things as long as they do not get to complicated. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
I take it that your truck is four wheel drive. To answer your question it is very easy to remove the front hub. There is a steel wire clip holding it in. Just remove it with a pair of pliers and the hub should come out. You may have to wiggle it some but that is all that holds it in. You can do a search on how to replace your ball joints in this forum and there you will find instructions on how to remove the hub and the entire front end if you wish.
Nothing complicated at all. The only hard part may be the hub is stuck on there and will need some persuasion to break it free.
I'm sure you know there is also a needle bearing in the hub assy that the axle end sits in. If you lock the 4X4 hubs, the squeel would go away if the problem was that replaceable bearing.
Thank you all, when I get home from work tonight I will lock the hubs and go for a short drive to see if the noise stops. All of your help has made me feel alot more comfortable about pulling this thing apart on my own this weekend. Hunting season here in Oregon starts in a few days so hopefully I'll have her up and running by then.
Thanks again, Scott.
Jack that wheel off the ground and check for play in the wheel bearings. The wheel bearings are not serviceable and the hole hub assembly may have to be replaced. Better to find out now than on the road.
just thought I'd let you all know that I got that front hub replaced on saturday, easy as pie. It was a little spendy, however I did finally find it for $225.00, better than the $450.00 the auto shop was going to charge me for just the part alone, god knows what labor would have been. Thanks again everyone, you all saved me a bundle!!!
I hope you have a good trip! I have only have had to replace one side on my 2000. Now I have 99,000 miles. should I replace the other side?
I was always told if it ant broke dont fix it!
My driver's side went bad recently and I just replaced both. The only reason was that I got a good deal on ebay for both OEM parts for about $200. If not I would have just replaced the one and waited on the other to go bad.
If it ain't broke don't fix it... If one side went, the other may not be ready to go. My drivers went bad but the knuckle seal had failed drawing in water. Pass side was good. With that said, I would get Ford front hubs. The parts store stuff isn't the best. If your needle bearing looks shot, but the larger bearing is ok, you can actually pull the needle bearing and replace it with the same thing that came out from napa. It is a torrington hb20 bearing, but torrington got taken over by timken so it is a torrington number, but timken bearing. Costs $12.00 from napa. Just drive the old needle bearing out, and drive the new one in. Just make sure you grease it.
