Is the 4.6 underpowered? Is the 5.4 a gas guzzler? Any comments about usage and real experiences appreciated. Will be used about 74% on interstate at 75 mph, but also offroad and in town. Thanks.
I have a 2000 expedition with the 5.4 On the freeway i get about 16 to 17 miles per gallon. If I keep my foot out of it I usually get about 14 to 15 miles per gallon in town. The lowest I got was 12. I have 3.55 limited slip rear end which does help on the freeway at 80 I am only turning over 2,300 rpm. I also opened up the exhaust with a 2 chamber 40 series flowmaster muffler with dual 3 1/2 inch tips. It relieved alot of back pressure and made it coast better. The main reason I got the 5.4 is because I wanted to make sure that I could get out of the way of things if I wanted to. Because the expedition ways over 5,000 pounds. I would go with the 5.4 because you are only going to gain about 1 mpg better.
Drove F150 Supercabs and Supercrews with the 4.6 and 5.4.
I have experienced a tremendous amount of transmission shifting when I drove trucks with the 4.6/elctronic auto transmission combination. The shifting is in response to small changes made with the accelerator. This is very annoying and a Ford Service Manager stated that "it is something that you have to learn to live with." This is a high reving engine and I question the life of it before major repairs are required.
The 5.4 engine is much smoother, lower reving engine. It makes a big difference and I would not buy a Ford without it.
