Radar Detector
Radar detectors aren't failsafe. They work really well. It's usually a line of sight thing. call it early warning. They'll give you enough time to slow down 5-10 mph...but if you are truly booking it over the speed limit, you are going to get caught
although, the Laser warning is just that...a warning. By the time you hear it, the cop already has your speed.
Trust me you need the Laser Veil coating!!! I use it and it does reduce the distance that the LEO can get a laser reading. Also you can buy a Laser Shield tag cover. The Laser Shield cover scatters the laser signal to reduce the reading distance. Laser Veil is around $90 for one can that is enough to coat up to 5 cars! and the laser shield is only $20. One more thing, laser shifters/jammers are not illegal in Texas yet if you want the ultimate protection.
If you do not mind me asking, what detector do you use the most? The Valentine One has the best laser reception of all the windshield mounted detectors.
PM me and I'll tell you where to find these products. No I do not sell any radar products I'm just a big enthusiast!! I also know a few of the designers of radar detectors and also know some of the groups that test the top detectors each year.
I Have lots of family in Houston and Spring Texas.
One more thing, Always turn POP off because one: You'll pick up falses from Cobra and Rocky Mountain Radar detectors. These detectors all leak from their radar horns Ka and K signals. Also POP mode is illegal to use to give a ticket from and only three states use POP mode to get a quick reading then the LEO switches to instant-on to get the legit reading. Instant-on will seem like POP . POP mode turned on will lower the overall sensitivity of the whole detector. Also turn off SWS, Ku(if your detector has it).
Sorry, I just read your earlier post where you showed what detector you are using. Did not mean to ask an already answered question. Please do not take offense to this but my friend who designs detectors also tests all of the brands in the lab. In his tests, The Cobras have the lowest sensitivity on laser reception of the top brands. Even though my friend does not work for Valentine One he admits that the V1 has the best laser reception of all the windshield mounted units. My friend almost got in trouble for emailing me the test results!

The best defense is your own common sense combined with a quality detector(Your eyes will usually see the LEO before a cheap detector will pick up their signal) My two cents

I have been curious about the licence plate shields, but don't think I'd get away with it. Texas is cracking down on anything on or around the plate. I've had college friends with TAMU or UT licence plate frames get tickets because they slightly block "TEXAS" or any character on the plate...
I am curious about the Ku band though...why turn it off? I leave mine on in the off chance one of the Houston/Galveston PDs upgrade.

Hope this helps some.Anything that speeds up the detection ability can be the difference between a ticket or a close call. I agree that your Model Cobra has a great display. One of the best out there.
One more tip: If you want slightly better laser detection then mount your Cobra lower on your windshield(make sure that it is above anything that could block it-wipers,etc.) If you want slightly better radar performance then mount your Cobra higher on the windshield. Professional tests have backed up these claims. Also make very, very sure that your Cobra is mounted absolutely flat. I see lots of people with their detectors aiming up towards the sky or facing down towards their hood
Making sure that a detector is aimed straight ahead and is level makes tons of difference in the detectors ability to pick up laser/radar.About the tag cover: You can use Laser Veil(which is a nearly colorless paint type coating) on your front reflective surfaces(headlights, fog lamps, chrome trim and tags! If you do not want to coat the tag then you can buy a clear tag cover minus a tag frame(so as not to block any part of the lettering) and paint the clear cover on both sides with Laser Veil. The police would see no obstructions of your tag and you would have an improvement on laser blasts.
Laser Veil comes with four brushes and instructions and enough Veil to coat up to 5 vehicles. You could paint right over your front tag and the LEO would never know the difference. I have Veil coated on my rear tag and have a Laser Shield tag cover on the front(even though my state does not require a front tag, I'm hoping the LEO will see the front tag and try to target it first!)
