Radar Detector
I use a V1 mostly on highways(not hard-wired)
I have a Whistler Pro-78 Rec. C Update (not hard-wired) mostly around town(best detector in the less than $200 range)
I just purchased an Escort/Passport 9500i! I'm going to send it in to Escort to have it upgraded to the newer 9500iX update. Great GPS features(ability to lock out false alarms!)
The V1 has the best sensitivity of the three but the 9500i is very close! If you are on a budget look at the Pro-78 or the new XTR-695(releasing this month)Both Pro-78 and XTR-695 have great Ka band range! Please skip buying a Cobra!!!
I also use laser Veil coating on my headlight, foglight and chrome trim. This coating reduces the range that a laser gun can get a speed reading.
I'm going to hard-wire all three detectors. The V1 costs $399, 9500iX $499, and the Pro-78 runs anywhere from $130-180
If you want the most sensitive and a super stealth system look at the Escort/Passport 9500ci remote mounted kit. The kit is expensive!!!! though $1599!!! It includes a remote mounted radar receiver and two front and one rear laser jammers/receivers!! If you live in a state that bans laser jammers then you can switch the jammers to receive mode only.
Sorry no pictures. Will try to post some soon.
I think I need to upgrade though. Current one is 2 yrs old and it still thinks X and K are the predominant radar types. So grocery stores and gas stations are always setting it off. I've learned to ignore X and K radars, but Ka radars get my attention. So does the laser one. That is one freaky sound
as for mounting, I mount it on the windshield slightly off-center of the center tray. that way the cord drops down along the right side of the radio to the power plug
I've seen guys hardwire them before. they mount them adjacent to the rearview mirror. it's very subtle and easy to miss. I'm just too lazy to spend the effort to do the wiring.
The receiver mounts behind the grill, the display is in my left air vent (you can mount these in a gauge pod also), the laser detector is small I have mine located top center of the windshield. All of the wiring is hidden. It's tied into the ignition circuit so it comes on a goes off with the ignition. All I see is the laser detector (3/4" w x 1.5" L) and the 2-1/16 display.
I have been extremely pleased with the performance so much so that I have installed the same thing in my Mustang.
to OP: you can always buy an expensive detector. they all do the same basic function. you just get some cool features like GPS, Voice, Radar locator with the expensive models.
that remote system sounds pretty sweet though. the detector on the windsheild is my biggest complaint. it pisses cops off when they see it, and all Military bases are supposed to make you take it down (they're illegal on base).

There are some detectors that you can hit a false button on that do not use GPS. When you hit the button they capture a snapshot of the signal/waveform and store it. Future hits from any location are ignored if they match a captured false trigger. I'm considering getting one of those for my truck rather than a GPS unit.

little things like ^^^ are why I've gotten insensitive about the x and k
I have it suctioned under the rear view mirror and hardwired through the electrochromatic mirror harness...I've been doing it this way for my past three cars. These have saved my but many times...but not every time! If you get hit with a laser or Pop gun all the detector is telling you is that you've got a ticket coming.

The Escort/Passport 8500 X50 is a great detector! You will not go wrong with the 8500 X50. Same sensitivity as the 9500i and 9500iX just with fewer features(does not have voice alerts, GPS lock-out, Red-light and speed camera warnings based on GPS location and updatable data base)
The red and blue versions are the same except it costs more to produce blue L.E.D's.

I promise that I'm not bashing people that own or purchase Cobra detectors.

radar detectors are like CAI's for these trucks...everybody has their preference
I like the Cobra's because they are cheap and effective. besides, when I do speed, I'm only going about 3-4 mph over the limit.
I can't justify the price of the other detectors. Especially for something I could easily do without.
